Masataka Yoshida

Masataka Yoshida was born on July 15, 1993, in Japan and he is a renowned professional baseball player currently playing as a designated hitter and left fielder for the Boston Red Sox in the Major League Baseball (MLB). Memorable for his immaculate performances on the field, Yoshida started his professional career with the Orix Buffaloes of the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) – a league he is remembered with reverence.

During his college years, Yoshida played baseball for Aoyama Gakuin University. He got his big break in 2015, getting drafted in the first round by the Orix Buffaloes. The 2016 season marked the start of Yoshida’s batting career in Nippon Professional Baseball. That season, he played 63 games with a commendable .290 batting average, amassing 10 home runs and 34 RBIs.

In 2017, Yoshida continued to impress, achieving a .311 batting average from 64 games that included 12 home runs and 38 RBIs. Yoshida’s magic moment came during Game 5 of the 2022 Japan Series against the Tokyo Yakult Swallows. He hit two crucial home runs, one of them a deciding walk-off, which proved pivotal in Orix’s victory in seven games. Over seven seasons with Orix, from 2016 to 2022, Yoshida amassed a .327 batting average, 467 RBIs, and 133 home runs in 762 games.

On December 7, 2022, Yoshida was posted by Orix Buffaloes to be available for all 30 teams in the Major League Baseball (MLB), kicking off a 30-day negotiation period. A week later, he signed a five-year deal reportedly worth $90m with the Boston Red Sox. Later in January 2023, he ranked 87th in Baseball America’s list of top 100 baseball prospects, including all players joining MLB from international leagues. Although he was labeled “alarmingly low” by Peter Abraham from The Boston Globe, Yoshida continued to prove his worth in MLB. In April 2023, he hit two home runs in the same inning, including a grand slam against the Milwaukee Brewers. For his exceptional performance, Yoshida was named American League Player of the Week for the week of May 1-7.

In 2024, the Red Sox decided to use Yoshida mainly as a designated hitter, per the manager, Alex Cora’s comment, “if we have to, we have to, but we prefer not.” Beyond MLB, Yoshida also represented the Japan national baseball team in the 2014 Haarlem Baseball Week, 2015 Summer Universiade, and 2019 exhibition games against Mexico, and 2019 WBSC Premier 12. In 2019, Yoshida scored a spot at the exhibition games against Mexico and was chosen for the 2019 WBSC Premier12.

In 2023, Yoshida played for Japan in the World Baseball Classic, where he set a record of 13 RBIs, earning a place in the All-Classic Team at the end of the tournament.
