Rutschman, fondly known as “Rooster”, hails from Sherwood, Oregon, where his journey began at Sherwood High School. Displaying an undeniable talent for baseball from a young age, he was slot into the 40th round of the 2016 MLB draft by the Seattle Mariners. Nevertheless, he chose to attend Oregon State University instead, developing his skills further with the Oregon State Beavers.

At Oregon State, Rutschman showcased his talent beyond the baseball field, playing college football as a placekicker during his freshman year. This genuine embodiment of athleticism however was never more evident for Rutschman than on the baseball diamond. In his first year as a Beaver, he participated in 61 games, recording a batting average of .234, two home runs, and 33 runs batted in (RBIs). This impressive performance earned him an opportunity to play in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Falmouth Commodores during the collegiate summer.

Pushing the envelope each year, Rutschman continued his run of brilliance as a sophomore and junior. In 2018, he boasted a remarkable batting average of .408 and 83 RBIs, simultaneously leading the Beavers to win the 2018 College World Series—their 3rd NCAA Division I Baseball National Championship. The Games saw Rutschman record an unprecedented 17 hits, a College World Series record. By the end of his junior season, he was celebrating an astounding season batting average of .411, complemented with 17 home runs and 58 RBIs. It was in this year he was named the 2019 Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year.

After demonstrating consistent excellence and promise, Rutschman was selected as the first overall pick in the 2019 MLB draft by the Baltimore Orioles. He signed an extraordinary $8.1 million deal, which at the time, was the highest MLB draft signing bonus ever disbursed. From the Gulf Coast League Orioles to the Aberdeen IronBirds, Rutschman paid his dues before making his much-anticipated debut in MLB in 2022.

His debut year was unfortunately marred by a strained triceps muscle, causing him to miss the season’s start. However, upon recovery, he exhibited a stunning performance in his first MLB game by recording a strikeout and scoring the first of many hits—a triple. The feat made him the first MLB player to accomplish a triple as his first MLB hit since Jason Perry in 2008.

Regardless of the setback, Rutschman continued to excel during the 2022 season. He finished with a batting average of .254, along with 13 home runs and 42 RBIs over 113 games. His sparkling record saw him win the 2022 Louis M. Hatter Most Valuable Oriole Award, solidifying his position as one of the brightest stars in MLB.

In the 2023 Opening Day, Rutschman reached another career milestone by batting 5-for-5 with a home run. Following his remarkable performance, he was selected for his first All-Star Game. Rutschman was also chosen for the 2023 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby, a testament to his exceptional batting capabilities and prowess.

Rutschman’s progression continued steadily into 2024. In the Orioles’ season-opening victory against the Angels, he became the first player since Joe Lahoud to reach base safely in at least his first eight career plate appearances on Opening Day. This was merely the overture to the plethora of records Rutschman would rewrite in 2024. His first career grand slam against Kansas City Royals’ reliever Will Smith and his unprecedented feat of homering from both sides of the plate in one game further consign his unparalleled abilities to the pages of MLB history.

While Rutschman’s accomplishments in MLB are undeniably impressive, one cannot discuss his career without mentioning his grandfather, Ad Rutschman. A renowned coach in his own right, Ad not only was a significant influence on young Rutschman but also continues to be a source of inspiration.

Rutschman’s affectionate nickname “Rooster”, derived from his admiration for the fictional character Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw from the film Top Gun: Maverick, offers a glimpse into his charismatic personality off the field. Reflecting his dedication, talent, and ambition, Adley Stan Rutschman’s career continues to be a paragon of excellence in Major League Baseball.
