Joey Loperfido's Biography

Born on May 11th, 1999, Mario Joseph Loperfido is a professionally trained American baseball outfielder, currently showcasing his exceptional talent in the Toronto Blue Jays team of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his powerful debut in the MLB in 2024 when he was part of the acclaimed Houston Astros roster.

His journey into baseball started in Haddonfield, New Jersey, where he attended Haddonfield Memorial High School. In his high school years, the sports fields became his playground as he honed his athletic skills. College further provided an avenue for his baseball aspirations when he joined Duke University and committed himself to their baseball team.

In 2019, Loperfido was given the opportunity to further develop his prowess on the diamond when he participated in the prestigious collegiate summer baseball with the Cotuit Kettleers for the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Loperfido finally actualized his dream of transitioning from college baseball to the professional league when he was selected by the Houston Astros in the seventh round of the much-anticipated 2021 Major League Baseball draft. He made an impact from the beginning, making his professional debut in the same year with the Single–A Fayetteville Woodpeckers.

Throughout 2022, Loperfido expanded his professional dominion, playing for Fayetteville and the High–A Asheville Tourists. By 2023, he began the season with Asheville, but only after eight games, he was promoted to the Double–A Corpus Christi Hooks, suggestive of his increasing value to the team.

In 2024, Loperfido kick-started his year with the Triple–A Sugar Land Space Cowboys. During his trajectory there, he played 25 games, impressively hitting .287/.393/.713 with 13 home runs, 27 RBI, and five stolen bases.

The same year, on April 30, Loperfido found himself ascended to the 40-man roster and was promoted to the Major Leagues for the first time. During his debut, he significantly hit a two RBI single, outshining the Cleveland Guardians pitcher Carlos Carrasco. Shortly after, he hit his first career home run on May 16, leading his team against the Oakland Athletics.

However, on May 27, he was temporarily demoted to Sugar Land to create space on the roster for José Abreu, only to return a week after Abreu’s release from the team on June 14. In his 38 total games for Houston, he slashed .236/.299/.359 with two home runs, 16 RBI, and two stolen bases.

Loperfido’s career took a significant turn on July 29, 2024, when along with Jake Bloss and Will Wagner, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for the seasoned pitcher Yusei Kikuchi.
