Gunnar Randal Henderson, a celebrated American professional baseball shortstop and third baseman, was born on June 29, 2001, in Montgomery, Alabama. He was brought up in Selma, Alabama, where he exhibited a knack for sports from a young age. His athletic prowess led him to play both basketball and baseball at his school, John T. Morgan Academy, and he quickly proved himself as a star player.

During his sophomore season, he committed to play baseball at the distinguished Auburn University, indicating the pivotal role that baseball played within his life. The crowning moment of his senior year in 2019 was being named Alabama Player of the Year when he astoundingly batted .559, achieved 17 doubles, nine triples, and 11 home runs, scored 69 runs, and collected 75 RBIs, all while stealing 32 bases. His exceptional athletic talents were not confined to just baseball, as exhibited by Henderson’s basketball prowess that earned him the Alabama Independent School Association Player of the Year title. After graduation, his outstanding contributions to John T. Morgan Academy were widely recognized, with his uniform number 2 retired by the school’s baseball program in 2021.

Henderson’s professional baseball journey began when he was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the second round of the 2019 Major League Baseball draft, with the Orioles acquiring his talents with the 42nd overall pick. He immediately demonstrated his worth by ending his trading contract for an impressive $2.3 million. As an opener to his MLB career, Henderson was assigned to the Gulf Coast League Orioles at the rookie level, where he finished his first professional season with a commendable .259 batting average, one home run, and 11 RBI.

More success followed in 2020, when despite the disruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Henderson’s commitment to the sport never faltered. His resilience and continuous hard work earned him a spot on the Orioles’ alternate training site and participation in the team’s fall Instructional League. In 2021, Henderson further solidified his reputation in the minor league system as the best athlete, subsequently being promoted between three teams in the same season and showcasing his immense potential by slashing .258/.350/.476 with 17 home runs, and 74 RBI.

In 2022, Henderson began the season batting .312/.452/.573 and knocking out eight home runs with 35 RBI in 157 at bats. His incredible performance earned him a promotion to the Triple-A Norfolk Tides and culminated in his selection to represent the Orioles at the 2022 All-Star Futures Game. His first major league hit, a home run off Triston McKenzie, was the highlight of his 34-game stint in the Orioles, marred by a .259 batting average and four home runs and 18 RBIs.

After such a fast-paced start to his career, Henderson showed no signs of slowing down in 2023, when he won the American League Rookie of the Year Award and a Silver Slugger Award. His remarkable .255 AVG, .814 OPS, 82 RBI, and 28 HRs in the regular season cemented his status as a young star on the rise.

2024 started with more accolades and records for Henderson, as he was awarded the March/April American League Player of the Month Award for his outstanding performance.
