Christian Dickson Walker was born on March 28, 1991, in the United States. His talent in baseball was finely honed to forge a remarkable career. Walker’s affinity for baseball was apparent from his high school years, where he attended the Kennedy-Kenrick Catholic High School in Norristown, Pennsylvania. The Los Angeles Dodgers recognized his talent early on, drafting him in the 49th round of the 2009 MLB Draft. However, Walker chose a different path and instead of signing with the Dodgers, attended the University of South Carolina, playing college baseball for the South Carolina Gamecocks from 2010 to 2012.
His time with the Gamecocks was ceiling-shattering, where he greatly contributed to the team winning the College World Series in two consecutive years, 2010 and 2011. Not stopping there, Walker helped his team once again reach the 2012 College World Series, where they valiantly battled the Arizona Wildcats but narrowly missed the victory. Walker’s outstanding skills didn’t go unnoticed. He concluded his college career, tying with Dustin Ackley for the most hits in the College World Series. During his tenure at the University of South Carolina, Walker played in 206 games and delivered an impressive 336/.427/.533 hit with 30 home runs and 137 runs batted in. In the summer of 2011, he continued to hone his skills during the collegiate summer baseball with the Harwich Mariners under the Cape Cod Baseball League.
Upon finishing college, Walker’s career began to rise sharply. In 2012, the Baltimore Orioles identified Walker’s potential and selected him in the fourth round of the MLB Draft. His debut came with the Aberdeen IronBirds, where he played in 22 games with a compelling .284/.376/.420 hit ratio and two home runs. The succeeding year saw him begin with the Delmarva Shorebirds, rapidly promoted to the Frederick Keys and further celebrated in the All-Star Futures Game. Post the game, he was promoted to the Double-A Bowie Baysox. Walker’s performance kept soaring, ending the 2013 season playing in 103 games with a 300/.362/.453 hit ratio, and 11 home runs. He started 2014 back with Bowie.
One of Walker’s momentous occasions arrived on September 17, 2014, when he was called up from AAA-Norfolk to the Orioles. He stepped into the major leagues for the first time on the same day. Facing off against seasoned Toronto Blue Jays pitcher J. A. Happ, Walker doubled his maiden major league hit. With each passing game, Walker’s performance scaled new highs, culminating in his first multi-hit game and first career major league home run off Boston Red Sox starter, Rubby De La Rosa.
However, professional sports careers often twist with unexpected turns, walker’s career was no different. In 2017, the Orioles designated Walker, leading him on a course that would shape the next phase of his career. Briefly claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Reds, he was soon waived again and claimed by the Arizona Diamondbacks, paving the way for Walker’s meteoric rise in this franchise.
Assigned to the Reno Aces of the Pacific Coast League (PCL), Walker proved his mettle by being named 2017 PCL’s Most Valuable Player. Further demonstrating his worth, he was again called to play for the Diamondbacks in the same year.
Indeed, Walker’s addition to the Diamondbacks was highly fruitful for both the player and the team. Replacing Paul Goldschmidt, Walker became a regular first baseman for the Diamondbacks the following season, showcasing strong performances over the years. In 2019, Walker marked his season with an exceptional performance, achieving a top Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) rating among National League first basemen, and leading all major league first basemen with 139 assists.
Despite the disruption by the pandemic in the 2020 season, Walker kept his performance steady. And in 2021, he continued to contribute commendably to his team. In the subsequent year, he attained a career-high of 36 home runs, drove in 94 runs, and bagged his first career Gold Glove Award.
Walker’s dedication to the game did not go unnoticed – on January 13, 2023, he agreed to a one-year, $6.5 million contract with the Diamondbacks. That season saw Walker improve at an extraordinary rate, marking career highs in RBIs, total bases, and slugging percentage, winning his second consecutive Gold Glove Award.
