Alex Bregman's Biography

Alex Bregman, born on March 30, 1994, is an accomplished professional American baseball player. As a third baseman for the Houston Astros, he showed exceptional promise from a young age, setting a series of impressive records and receiving a number of accolades.

Raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bregman spent his high school years at Albuquerque Academy. As a sophomore in 2010, he made history as the first high school player to win the USA Baseball Player of the Year Award. The following year, he left behind an impressive .678 batting average and set a New Mexico season record with 19 home runs.

After high school, Bregman attended Louisiana State University (LSU) where he played college baseball. During his three years there, he was voted the 2013 National Freshman of the Year by Baseball America and won the 2013 Brooks Wallace Award, recognising him as the country’s top college shortstop. He also earned the title of a two-time All-American.

The high point of Bregman’s college career came at the end of his junior year when he was chosen by the Houston Astros as the second pick in the first round of the 2015 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut just a year later in 2016.

As Bregman’s career progressed, so did his success. In 2017, he emerged as the youngest member of Team USA, which secured the gold medal in the World Baseball Classic. This was followed by him winning the 2017 World Series with the Astros. His array of achievements include being named the MVP of the 2018 MLB All-Star Game, leading the American League in doubles in 2018, and receiving the 2019 American League Silver Slugger Award. By 2022, he won his second World Series and by 2023, he had become the all-time leader in postseason home runs and runs batted in for a third baseman.

Bregman’s life extends beyond baseball. Born into a Jewish family, he was a regular attendee of Albuquerque’s Congregation Albert where he delivered a heartfelt Bar Mitzvah speech. His parents, both lawyers, held an influential presence in his life. His father, Sam Bregman, acted as chair of the New Mexico Democratic Party and was co-owner of the NBA Development League’s New Mexico Thunderbirds.

Bregman’s extended family also holds a rich baseball legacy. His father played baseball for the University of New Mexico Lobos in 1982, as did his uncle Ben. Bregman has two younger siblings. His brother, A.J., also an established baseball player, was chosen by the Astros in the 35th round of the 2018 MLB draft.

Bregman’s career started early – he began playing tee-ball at the age of four and served as a batboy for various university baseball teams. As a student, he primarily played catcher and led his high school team to a state championship as a freshman shortstop. His high school career was remarkable – it saw him achieve a batting average of .514 with three home runs in his freshman year, and a record-breaking 19 home runs as a junior.

A significant setback occurred in his senior year at high school when he seriously injured his throwing hand. Despite this, Bregman stayed resilient and was drafted by the Boston Red Sox as a second baseman in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft. However, he decided not to sign with them, choosing instead to attend LSU.

While at LSU, Bregman carried the number 30 on his jersey, representing the 30 teams that overlooked him in the first round of the 2012 draft. Despite this setback, Bregman demonstrated exceptional skill throughout his time at LSU. His baseball prowess spanned hitting, scoring, assisting and stealing bases – all of which he performed to an exceptional standard.

In the 2015 MLB draft, Bregman was selected by the Houston Astros. Despite debate around his potential to play as a shortstop, Bregman rose to prominence. In his initial season with the Astros, Bregman displayed remarkable talent and was soon promoted to the California League. In the following years, his skill led him to success at the double-A Corpus Christi Hooks and the AAA Fresno Grizzlies. In recognition of his achievements, he earned the title of 2016 Minor League Player of the Year.
