Robbie Lawler is set to hang up his gloves after an incredible 22-year career in the world of mixed martial arts (MMA). The former UFC Welterweight Champion will make his final appearance at UFC 290, which takes place on July 8th in Las Vegas as part of International Fight Week. Lawler has been a mainstay in the sport since 2001 and made his way back to the promotion after time away with Strikeforce. He eventually captured the welterweight title back in 2014 and successfully defended it two times, most notably against Carlos Condit at UFC 189 when they were awarded “Fight of the Year.”
It was announced via social media by Dana White that Lawler would be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame just two days prior to his fight at UFC 290 and will retire following this match up. White said: “I found Robbie Lawler when he was 19 years old, and [UFC] 290 will be final fight of his amazing 22-year career”. He is being joined by Rory MacDonald who fought him during their iconic battle at UFC 189 back in 2015.
Lawler vs Price is set to headline a stacked prelim card for MMA fans ahead of what should be an unforgettable night for any fan or fellow fighter alike who wants to give one last salute to Robbie before he retires from competition forever. That portion of the card will air live on ABC prior to pay-per-view kicking off 10pm ET/7pm PT featuring Alexander Volkanovski vs Yair Rodriguez as well as Brandon Moreno taking on Alexandre Pantoja for Flyweight Championship gold. Other fights include Robert Whittaker vs Dricus Du Plessis for middleweight contendership status alongside Jalin Turner battling Dan Hooker plus Bo Nickal vs Tresean Gore all taking place inside TMobile Arena come July 8th 2021 live from Las Vegas Nevada USA!Robbie Lawler’s career will no doubt be remembered fondly as one of the most beloved figures to ever step foot in the octagon. As a person, he was an honorable warrior who showed respect for his opponents, and earned it from his peers as well. His courage inside the cage was unmatched, and even though he was on the wrong side of some big punches and kicks over his 22 years competing – nothing could beat him down.
Lawler is still dedicated to coaching other aspiring fighters with American Top Team based out in Coconut Creek, Florida where he has been living with his family since 2002. He stated during an interview that MMA had been good to him so he wanted to use this time after retirement focusing on helping others reach their goals by passing on what knowledge he has accumulated throughout these past two plus decades serving as a professional fighter.
As expected “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler will leave behind an impressive record of 28-15 overall while going 13-9 inside UFC alone making him one half of arguably the greatest welterweight title fight ever produced when him and MacDonald fought at UFC 189.. From humble beginnings working part time jobs at Burger King or attending school full time then becoming just 4th fighter outside of Japan holding a major MMA belt back in 2001 – all eyes are set for July 8th 2021 when fans witness possibly one final epic performance from this legend before officially saying goodbye forever!
