It looks like Jon Jones’ potential heavyweight title fight against former champion Stipe Miocic could be his last, unless another former champion can make their way back to the UFC.
Jones won the vacant heavyweight title in a quick fashion at UFC 285 back in March and he will likely face Miocic next. This landmark event is being targeted by Dana White to take place at Madison Square Garden later this year.
According to Jones, beating Miocic would be enough to forever cement his legacy and give him more than enough to call it quits on a successful career: “I feel like the Stipe fight will be plenty for me… I really don’t feel like I have much else left to prove after beating Stipe Miocic… I’ve been in the game a long time, and in fighter years I’m an old guy…I just want to be around for my family [and] have a good head on my shoulders with joints that work.”
While Jones isn’t slamming the door shut entirely on his career just yet – he has said if free agent and former heavyweight champ Francis Ngannou is somehow able to return back into the UFC fold then he would certainly entertain that lucrative matchup before calling it quits for real. He explained: “I do believe a Francis Ngannou fight would be worth entertaining not retiring… It [would] bring in some serious revenue and that would make it worth my while”.
With so many questions up in the air regarding how things will play out over course of 2021, fans of MMA can at least find comfort knowing they’ll get one more great matchup involving two legendary fighters if all goes according plan. Whether or not Jones decides stick around past this pivotal bout remains unclear though its sure gonna strange seeing him go either way.
Comments:
He’s already lost a step
Jones is too slow to handle someone like Miocic
That would be an epic matchup with both at their peaks
Even if he does win, it won’t last long before he gets taken out again
Jon Jones was never that great in the first place
Stipe has been on fire lately and could easily take out Jon Jones now.
People are sleeping on Stipe’s skillset – he’ll dominate this fight for sure!
I don’t think Jon Jones can pull off a win here. His best days are behind him.
No chance against Miocic at this point, Jones’ time is up.
The only reason people even talk about him is because of his past success. He’s done now.
This isn’t going to be close – Miocic wins no problem.
You’ve seen what happened when they faced off in the past? It will happen again.
