Sophie Cunningham

Sophie Cunningham is an American professional basketball guard for the Indiana Fever. As of September 13, 2026, she is listed on Indiana’s current WNBA roster wearing No. 8. The 6-foot-1 Cunningham was born August 16, 1996, attended the University of Missouri and entered the WNBA when the Phoenix Mercury selected her with the 13th overall pick—the first selection of the second round—in the 2019 draft.

A Columbia, Missouri, native, Cunningham was a four-year starter for the Tigers and earned SEC Freshman of the Year honors in 2016. Her college résumé also included multiple All-SEC selections, reflecting the competitive edge and versatile guard play that carried into her pro career. Phoenix drafted her in 2019, and she spent her first six WNBA seasons with the Mercury, including its 2021 run to the WNBA Finals.

Cunningham joined the Fever in the four-team trade completed on January 31, 2025. She helped Indiana win the 2025 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup, the first such title in franchise history. A perimeter-oriented guard, she brings floor spacing with her outside shooting along with energetic, physical, assertive play on the wing; Indiana’s 2026 team coverage has also highlighted her tone-setting work off the bench.
