BIOGRAPHY
Steve Nguyen is an acclaimed artist, film producer, writer, and director who has used his multimedia storytelling prowess to inspire, inform, and entertain audiences across the globe. Born on December 30, 1985, in the United States, Nguyen’s eclectic portfolio in the media industry dates back to 2001.
Nguyen began his career in entertainment at a young age, making appearances in multiple films and network television programs between 2001 and 2005. Notable shows included Las Vegas, Scrubs, Freaks and Geeks, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and The Man Show. During this period, he gained valuable industry experience behind the camera when he worked as a production assistant for Universal Pictures on blockbusters like Jarhead and The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift.
In 2009, Nguyen made waves with a short documentary film titled “The Making of a Memoir”. Through this project, Nguyen worked together with Vietnamese author Lac Su to promote his memoir, I Love Yous Are For White People, earning Su national exposure and CNN, NPR, SBTV, and KSCI features.
In 2012, Nguyen marked the 67th anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bombing by directing and producing an animated film named Hibakusha. Based on the early life of Hiroshima atomic bomb survivor, Kaz Suyeishi, Nguyen’s poignant film echoed the call for nuclear disarmament and was dedicated to the American Society of Hiroshima-Nagasaki A-Bomb Survivors. Hibakusha featured talented voice actors such as Karin Anna Cheung, Connie Lim, Daisuke Suzuki, Jane Lui, and William Frederick Knight. The exposure and acclaim following the Hibakusha release led Nguyen and his team on a nationwide tour, visiting educational and cultural institutions to screen the film.
Recognizing the power of multimedia, Nguyen founded Studio APA with fellow director Choz Belen. The studio became a collaborative hub for producing animated films, children’s books, and music videos. Capitalizing on the popularity of digital media consumption, Nguyen and Belen also created a dedicated YouTube channel for their studio.
In 2013, Hibakusha stood out at the International Uranium Film Festival in Rio de Janeiro, securing both the Special Achievement Award and Best Animated Short. The same year, Nguyen furthered his anti-nuclear advocacy by producing a travel documentary segment titled “Hiroshima Revisited” in association with Global Zero, a nuclear disarmament campaign organization.
In 2020, Nguyen broadened his artistic horizons by releasing his first children’s book, To Baby From Daddy. The book, published by Skyhorse Publishing and Simon & Schuster, was filled with personal anecdotes, touching illustrations, and loving advice conveyed from father to daughter.
Throughout his dynamic career, Nguyen has showcased his ability to work across different mediums. He co-founded ChannelAPA.com, a news source highlighting Asian-Americans in mainstream/independent media. This platform made headlines as a top Asian American news source and was featured on both KoreAm Magazine and Myx TV.
Music served as another platform where Nguyen excelled. His direction of YouTube star Megan Lee’s music video, “Love, Laugh, & Live”, attained considerable attention. He further expanded his repertoire by directing and producing animated music videos for an esteemed set of artists including Tiger JK and Yoon Mi-rae, Awkwafina, and the electropop band Mansions on the Moon.
Nguyen channeled his passion for social causes by joining hands with the global campaign, A World at School, to promote universal education. Collaborating with eminent personalities such as hip-hop artist Lecrae and Theirworld founder Sarah Brown, the project aimed to pressurize governments to involve in providing universal education.
In recent years, Nguyen moved audiences with deeply personal works. In 2020, he released a personal short animated documentary called Blast Burn that focused on the heartbreaking topic of miscarriage. Today, Steve Nguyen’s creative journey continues – stretching across diverse mediums, bridging cultural gaps, and providing a platform for important social conversations.
