BIOGRAPHY
Bobby King Green, otherwise known in the MMA ranks as “King,” was born on September 9, 1986 in San Bernardino, California. Tragically, his family life was interrupted at an early age when his father was incarcerated and his mother fell prey to drug addiction, leading Green to enter the foster care system when he was only five. Despite these early challenges, Green developed a strong sense of self, starting to wrestle in his sophomore year at A.B. Miller High School in Fontana, California, and even placing twice in the state tournament.
His success in the ring early on triggered his passion for mixed martial arts while he also worked in a warehouse to support his son. Green would go on to make his professional mixed martial arts debut in January 2008. He quickly built up quite a reputation with an 8–1 record while fighting in independent events. His talent did not go unnoticed and he was soon noticed by Affliction Entertainment.
Green begun his journey into the professional leagues with King Of The Cage promotion. On February 25, 2010, Green defeated Ricky Legere and won the King of the Cage Junior Welterweight Championship. Although losing to Tim Means afterwards, Green never faltered. On April 21 he bested Dom O’Grady becoming the King of the Cage Lightweight Champion.
In 2011, Green extended his horizons by signing a four-fight deal with Strikeforce. Despite facing injuries and losses in numerous matches, Green never backed down. He continued to compete and grow in the Strikeforce, challenging formidable opponents and garnering victories along the way. His journey in the Strikeforce ended with a hard-fought win against Matt Ricehouse in August 2012.
He then transitioned into the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 2013 defeating Jacob Volkmann in UFC 156 via a rear-naked choke submission in the third round. His performance that night earned him the Submission of the Night honors. In the following years, he faced notable opponents including Danny Castillo, James Krause, Pat Healy, Abel Trujillo, and Jim Miller among others. Despite a number of pull-outs due to injuries, Green upheld his nickname “King,” displaying his exemplary resilience and commitment to the sport repeatedly. His bouts often rewarded him with Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night honors, including a match against Josh Burkman in 2016 and a furious confrontation with Lando Vannata in 2017, which resulted in a draw and a Fight of the Night award.
However, Green’s journey was not without trials and tribulations. He lost multiple matches and even announced retirement after losing to Drakkar Klose in his UFC bout in 2018. He took a brief hiatus only to return more focused and determined in late 2019 facing Francisco Trinaldo. More memorable clashes and victories followed, with bouts against Clay Guida, Alan Patrick, and Nasrat Haqparast.
His recent bouts against Rafael Fiziev and Al Iaquinta in 2021 resulted in a unanimous decision loss and a TKO win respectively. Also, his match against Nasrat Haqparast in early 2022 earned him another win via unanimous decision. However, his match against Islam Makhachev later that year led to a loss via TKO in the first round. Still in 2022, Green received a six-month USADA suspension for testing positive for Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in an out-of-competition drug test, after which he is eligible to compete again in November 2022.
Green continued his MMA journey facing Drew Dober in December 2022 and despite the Fight of the Night award, he lost the match. 2023 saw him in the ring against Tony Ferguson, Grant Dawson, and Dan Hooker, recording wins, and against Jalin Turner, marking a loss.
In April 2024, Green fought Jim Miller at UFC 300 and emerged victorious through a unanimous decision. He scheduled his next bout against Paddy Pimblett for July 27, 2024 at UFC 304.
In a surprising move, Green announced his intent to change his name from Bobby Green to King. His enduring determination and relentless passion for the sport embody the regal essence of a King that he seeks to epitomize. Confirmed on July 7, 2024, he is now officially known as “King Green.”
Besides his professional life, Green is a proud father of three. Despite his rigorous training and demanding career, he strives to find balance and provide for his children. His journey is an inspiring revelation of resilience, perseverance, dedication, and undying love for the sport. It is without a doubt that “King” Green will continue to uphold his earned title, leaving a lasting impact in the MMA world.
