The Ultimate Fighting Championship is set to enthrall its followers with an upcoming mixed martial arts event titled ‘UFC on ABC: Whittaker vs. Aliskerov’, also known as UFC on ABC 6. The development is in the last stages and the event is slated to take place on June 22, 2024. This much anticipated match will create history, as it will be hosted by the grand Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The UFC had initially set its sights on making its grand debut in Saudi Arabia on March 2, 2024. Huspended due to a change in dates, the chairman of General Entertainment Authority in Saudi Arabia, Turki Alalshikh, officially declared the postponement on January 24. The decision to reschedule this landmark event was made with the intention of ensuring the highest quality of talent could take part.
One of the anticipated attractions of this event was the middleweight title eliminator bout. This match was expected to have Robert Whittaker, former UFC Middleweight Champion, and the welterweight winner at The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes, face off against Khamzat Chimaev. However, due to an unfortunate and sudden illness, Chimaev withdrew. The contender stepping in to replace him is Ikram Aliskerov, who had been scheduled to fight in the UFC on ESPN: Perez vs. Taira event a week earlier.
Another much-awaited middleweight bout was to be between Sharabutdin Magomedov and Ihor Potieria, but this needed to be rearranged. Potieria was reassigned to face Michel Pereira at UFC 301, and the contender stepping in to replace him is promotional newcomer Joilton Lutterbach.
In the bantamweight division, a match between Said Nurmagomedov and Montel Jackson had been planned. However, the unpredictable world of sporting events came into play when Nurmagomedov withdrew for undisclosed reasons. His replacement, Farid Basharat, was later reported to be injured and unable to compete. Consequently, the bout had to be cancelled.
In another middleweight bout, Abu Azaitar was slated to fight Denis Tiuliulin. However, an injury led to Azaitar’s replacement by Sedriques Dumas. This chain of events did not end there, as issues related to flight for Dumas led to the postponement of the bout.
The highlight of the main card was a featherweight bout between Muhammad Naimov and Melsik Baghdasaryan. In an unfortunate twist of events, Baghdasaryan had to pull out during the prep week due to a torn labrum in his left shoulder. With Baghdasaryan’s exit, Felipe Lima was brought in as a replacement.
