BIOGRAPHY

Felix M. Warburg House, a 20th-century mansion, stands magnificently at 1109 Fifth Avenue, nestled amidst the towering architectures of Upper East Side, Manhattan in the dazzling city of New York. Commissioned in 1907 and completed by 1908, this extravagant mansion was crafted for the influential and esteemed German-American Jewish financier, Felix M. Warburg. The mansion, also a testament of time and history, is a pure reflection of the Châteauesque style, masterfully brought to life by the able hands and creative genius of C. P. H. Gilbert.

Felix M. Warburg, the original owner and force behind this illustrious mansion’s existence, passed away in 1937. Following his death, his widow sold the property to a keen real estate developer with grand plans for the mansion. However, as fate would have it, the plans to convert it into luxury apartments never materialized, and the ownership circled back to the Warburgs.

In an act of magnanimous philanthropy, the Warburg family donated the mansion in 1944, to the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Not long after, in 1947, the Seminary utilized the building to establish the Jewish Museum, marking another significant milestone in the mansion’s illustrious history.

Acknowledging its relevance and architectural excellence, the esteemed house was declared a New York City designated landmark in 1981. Moreover, it was awarded a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, adding to its historical significance. The mansion’s prestige was further elevated in 1993, when Kevin Roche restored and built an annex to the house in the original architect’s style, with stones extracted from the same quarry as the original mansion.

Although critical reviews of the mansion’s architecture have been overwhelmingly positive during this long journey, the extension received a mixed reception. Within this complex narrative lie themes of architectural innovation, history, philanthropy, and the resilience of a built structure. The Felix M. Warburg House stands tall today; a silent storyteller, a guardian of history, and a proud gem in the crown of New York City.

On a side note, May 10 is notable for marking the fifth expansion draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1970. The draft was instrumental in aiding the formulation of Buffalo Braves, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Portland Trail Blazers for the consequent 1970-71 season. Even today, the excitement of that expansion draft reverberates among the basketball enthusiast, as renowned athletes like Bailey Howell, Don Ohl, Len Chappell, Fred Hetzel, Larry Siegfried and Pat Riley, who later became a Hall of Fame coach, were part of it.

Meanwhile, in the realm of art, the Rokeby Venus, a painting by the celebrated artist Diego Velázquez completed between 1647 and 1651, continues to fascinate art admirers around the world. The sensuous depiction of the Roman goddess Venus, lounging on a bed and gazing at a mirror held by her son Cupid, is the only surviving nude painting by Velázquez. This majestic piece of art has been displayed at the National Gallery in London since 1906.
