BIOGRAPHY
Xavier Avis McKinney, born on August 9, 1999, is an American professional football player who has carved a niche for himself as one of the prominent safeties in the National Football League (NFL), currently playing for the Green Bay Packers. Xavier’s journey in football has seen him move through different echelons, signifying his consistent strive for improvement.
McKinney first tasted football at Roswell High School in Roswell, Georgia. He registered a highly impressive performance in his senior year with 82 tackles and seven interceptions. After demonstrating his undoubted prowess in High school football, Xavier committed to play college football at the University of Alabama.
In 2017, the University of Alabama gave the budding football safety his first taste of college football. Served as a backup and special teams player, Xavier played in 13 games in his first year. The following year, he recorded a scintillating performance as a starter with 73 tackles, two interceptions, and three sacks. His outstanding performance led to his recognition as the defensive MVP of the 2018 Orange Bowl.
As an emerging star in college football, McKinney decided to raise his stakes. On January 4, 2020, he announced his intention to skip his senior season and enter the 2020 NFL draft. The decision resulted in him being selected by the New York Giants in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft.
On starting his professional career, McKinney faced some challenges. He was placed on reserve due to a fractured foot in September 2020, a month after being drafted by the Giants. After recovery, he was activated on November 28. He made a significant impact when he made his first career interception to help the Giants defeat the Dallas Cowboys in 2021.
McKinney continued his excellent performance intercepting two passes in a game against the Los Angeles Rams from two different quarterbacks, Matthew Stafford and John Wolford, solidifying his reputation as a valuable acquisition for the Giants. During a match against the Las Vegas Raiders in November 2021, he performed admirably, intercepting two passes and returning one for a touchdown, leading to a Giants win. His exceptional performance earned him the title of NFC Defensive Player of the Week.
Despite being sidelined due to a broken hand sustained during an ATV accident, McKinney didn’t let this dampen his spirits. He was put on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list, but was subsequently activated in December 2021. His constant drive and dedication didn’t go unrecognized. Alongside his teammate Bobby Okereke, McKinney became one of only two defenders in the NFL to not miss a single snap during the entire season.
As Xavier’s career spiraled upwards, McKinney signed a lucrative four-year contract of $67 million with the Green Bay Packers in March 2024. In his regular season debut, he displayed his impeccable interception skills that drew the attention of many NFL lovers. Over four consecutive games, he recorded a pick in each, becoming the first Packer in history, and the fourth in the NFL’s history to set such a record. McKinney finished his impressive run recording five consecutive interceptions in his first five weeks with the Packers, a record unheard of since 1970. Xavier McKinney’s journey from a high school sprinter to a celebrated NFL star only adds a distinct chapter to his inspiring life story.
