Tyre Phillips's Biography

Tyre Jerel Phillips, an accomplished American professional football guard, was born on January 29, 1997. Currently a free agent, Phillips had made a significant name for himself in the football world through his journey from a high school player to a recognized pro athlete.

Born and raised in Mississippi, Phillips began his sports journey in Grenada High School. He started playing football from his freshman season, along with other interests in basketball and marching band. However, following the advice of many, late in his junior year, Phillips made the significant decision of returning to the football field, a decision that set the trajectory of his future career.

Phillips attracted a number of scholarship offers from NCAA Division I Football Championship schools. Nevertheless, he opted to pursue his education and football career at East Mississippi Community College (EMCC), with an ultimate aim of becoming a division I recruit. His time at the EMCC was defined by two noteworthy seasons with the Lions. It was during this period that Phillips committed himself to Mississippi State, marking the commencement of an iconic journey, and enrolled in January 2017.

Benefiting from a redshirt in his first year at Mississippi State – an event Phillips often referred to as “the best thing I ever could have done” – he found himself playing at both tackles positions in an offensive line rotation during his junior year. His extraordinary performance led him to start all 13 games played by the Bulldogs in his senior season. Subsequently, Phillips had the chance to display his sporting prowess in the 2020 Senior Bowl.

Making a significant leap in his career, Phillips was chosen by the Baltimore Ravens in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft as the 106th overall pick. Following an auspicious training camp, he transitioned from tackle to offensive guard, clinching the starting position at the launch of the season, even while nursing an ankle injury. However, he was put on injured reserve on November 3, 2020, due to his troublesome ankle injury — only to be activated again on November 30. One of the memorable moments of Phillips’ career came in Week 15 against the Jacksonville Jaguars when he picked up a fumbled ball and ran for 22 yards.

The start of Philips’ 2021 season was marked by a significant setback, as he suffered a torn ACL during the season-opener against the Las Vegas Raiders, leading to his placement on injured reserve. But showcasing an impressive recovery, Phillips returned from injured reserve on October 16, 2021. Despite his comeback, he faced another hurdle and was placed back on injured reserve on December 30, 2021, signaling the end of his sophomore season.

At the start of the 2022 season, Phillips found himself parting ways with the Baltimore Ravens. His journey took another turn when he was signed by the New York Giants on September 1, 2022. However, on August 29, 2023, Phillips was released by the Giants and, despite a brief stint with the practice squad, he was released the following day. Nevertheless, Phillips didn’t stay a free agent for long, as he was quickly signed to the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad on September 4, 2023.

The twists and turns of Phillips’s career continued to unfold as he was signed by the Giants again, this time being selected off the Eagles’ practice squad on October 17, 2023. He was then thrust into the starting lineup in Week 7 at right tackle in place of the injured Evan Neal and started in nine of the next ten games. Phillips’s career, marked by resiliency and determination, reflects his commitment to the sport and his dedication towards achieving success at the highest level of professional football.
