Tanor Bortolini: From Wisconsin Roots to the National Football League

Born on the 18th of June 2002, Tanor Bortolini is a sterling name in American Professional football. He is known for his commendable talent as a football guard for the renowned Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League (NFL). Digging his cleats into the Wisconsin turf began Bortolini’s journey to professional football, a journey marked by tenacity, perseverance, and noteworthy achievement.

Kewaunee, Wisconsin marked the start of Bortolini’s football career. The American professional football guard attended Kewaunee High School from where his early football sparks ignited. Upon graduation, NFL prospect Bortolini found himself being courted by numerous prestigious schools including Columbia, Dartmouth, Iowa, Miami, and his home state, Wisconsin. Amongst the worthy contenders, the Wisconsin Badgers held the allure for native-son Bortolini. Unanimously deciding to stay home, he committed to play college football for the Badgers.

The 2020 season marked Bortolini’s freshman year which was impacted by the COVID pandemic, resulting in truncated gameplay. Bortolini saw action in only two games during this period. The following year, in 2021, he played in 10 games, with half of them featuring him as starting guard. His progress continued in the 2022 season, with Bortolini appearing in 11 games, making 10 starts while allowing only a single sack. This unsurpassed performance earned him honorable mention from the Big Ten, a nod to his ascending talent and critical playmaking.

Coming into the 2023 season, Bortolini was designated as the Badgers’ starting center. During the third week of play in a winning game against Georgia Southern, he faultered slightly with three errant snaps. Nevertheless, his overall contributions to the team remained substantial. Bortolini played in all 12 games of the season, always as the starting player and earning the highest Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade amongst the Badgers. As the end of the 2023 season approached, Bortolini took the decision to declare for the 2024 NFL Draft. His career at this stage already boasted 34 games, 28 of which he started, showing his versatility in starting games at offensive tackle, guard, and center. Bortolini was picked up by the Indianapolis Colts in the 4th round of the 2024 NFL Draft as the 117th overall draft. The early stages of his professional career were marred by a sprained big toe, an injury which forced him to sit out practices for the rest of preseason. His NFL debut as a starter was in week 4, playing a home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Colts found themselves in need of Bortolini’s services due to a neck injury suffered by veteran starting center, Ryan Kelly. Bortolini seized the opportunity, preparing with the first team during the practices preceding the Steelers game. His preparations paid off, delivering a powerful block leading running back Jonathan Taylor into the end zone for a touchdown during the first series of the game. His exuberant sideline celebration caught the attention of many, a moment etched in the annals of his young NFL career.

After the game, offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter humorously commented on Bortolini’s touchdown celebration, saying “Man, first game, he was damn sure excited to be out there. We’re trying to get the GPS data on that top speed there.”
