Spencer Michael Rattler: A Tale of Triumph and Turbulence in Professional Football

Spencer Michael Rattler, born on September 28, 2000, is forging his name into the annals of professional football as an eminent quarterback for the high-profile New Orleans Saints, an illustrious team within the National Football League (NFL). Spencer had honed his skills within the ardently competitive theatre of college football, bringing acclaim to the Oklahoma Sooners and the South Carolina Gamecocks before his prowess won him a coveted position in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL draft.

Spencer’s journey into football began at Pinnacle High School, Phoenix, Arizona, where he would spend all his four high school years. As a testament to his inherent talent, Spencer broke the Arizona high school passing record on his 18th birthday, throwing for a whopping 11,083 yards during his four-year tenure. His remarkable achievements included 116 passing touchdowns and rushing for 1,040 yards, with 14 rushing touchdowns.

Spencer’s crowning moment in his senior year occurred when he was named MVP of the Elite 11 at The Opening in Texas. Once enrolled at Oklahoma, Spencer had his first taste of top-tier college football during the semi-finals of the College Football Playoff against LSU. While the 2019 season saw him only in three games, allowing him to redshirt his freshman year, he came back with a vengeance, winning the starting quarterback job over his competitor, Tanner Mordecai.

However, Spencer’s career with Oklahoma was far from smooth, facing a series of defeats, injuries, and eventually being benched. Recognizing the need for a change, he moved on to the University of South Carolina in 2021 to play for the South Carolina Gamecocks under coach Shane Beamer, the start of a new leg in his football journey.

At South Carolina, Spencer led the Gamecocks to an 8-5 record in 2022, carving out memorable performances despite facing criticisms for his performance in early games. However, his ability to steer his team to victory over higher-ranked teams made him a notable figure in college football. He decided to stay on for another year at South Carolina in 2023, where he continued to excel even as the team finished with a 5-7 record.

Capitalizing on his collegiate success, Spencer declared for the 2024 NFL draft, finishing fifth in career passing yards and first in career completion percentage at South Carolina. His performance in the 2024 Senior Bowl, where he earned the MVP title, enthralled fans and scouts alike, culminating in the New Orleans Saints selecting Spencer with the 150th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft’s fifth round.
