Sione Takitaki's Biography

Sione Takitaki, an athlete of Tongan heritage, was born on June 8, 1995. His parents, Vaimaua and Fissipeau, raised Takitaki along with his four sisters and two brothers. Born in a Mormon family, Takitaki faced the tragic loss of his father at the tender age of 14, following which his faith and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints played a significant role in guiding his life choices.

From a young age, Takitaki displayed a natural knack for football, transitioning this talent into a professional career that currently sees him as a pivotal team member of the New England Patriots. His commemorative role as a linebacker for this National Football League (NFL) team speaks volumes about his dedication and prowess on the field.

Takitaki’s love for football and commitment to his faith influenced his decision to pursue a college education at Brigham Young University (BYU), where he first highlighted his talents on a national scale. From 2014 to 2018, he contributed tremendously to the BYU Cougars, recording a staggering 237 tackles in only four seasons. Included in this impressive figure are 32.5 tackles for a loss, along with 14.5 sacks. Demonstrating leadership and his exemplary performance, Takitaki earned the privilege to serve as the team captain in his senior year. During this period, he continued to shine as he led the Cougars with 118 tackles.

His outstanding college career paved the way for Takitaki’s entry into the NFL. The 2019 NFL draft saw the Cleveland Browns select Takitaki in the third round as the 80th overall pick. During his tenure with the Browns, he recorded some noteworthy achievements. One distinct moment in Week 11 of the 2020 season saw Takitaki intercept a pass thrown by the Philadelphia Eagles’ Carson Wentz, marking his first career interception. This outstanding play resulted in a 50-yard touchdown, proving to be a decisive moment in the 22-17 winning game.

However, alongside professional successes, the linebacker faced health-related challenges. In November 2020, Takitaki tested positive for COVID-19 and was placed on the reserve list by the Browns. After a challenging phase, he was activated back into the team on December 4 the same year. Despite the setback, Takitaki returned to the field with renewed vigor. Week 14 against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football witnessed his first-ever career sack on Lamar Jackson.

The 2020 season further saw Takitaki make a significant mark in the AFC Wildcard game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. His interception of a pass from Ben Roethlisberger in the fourth quarter played a pivotal role in the Browns’ 48-37 victory.

Building on his accomplishments, Takitaki entered the 2022 season as a starting linebacker alongside Anthony Walker Jr. and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. His professional journey, however, met with an unfortunate turn of events when he suffered a torn ACL in Week 13. This injury resulted in him being placed on injured reserve on December 7, 2022.

Despite the hurdles, Sione Takitaki’s commitment to the sport remained unyielding. March 16, 2023, marked a significant moment in his career as he signed a one-year contract extension with the Browns. However, his journey with the team ended by the following year. On March 14, 2024, Takitaki inked a two-year contract with the New England Patriots.

As a Patriot, he encountered further professional challenges as he was placed on the reserve/PUP list to start the season. However, demonstrating his persistent spirit, Takitaki was activated on October 12, cementing his position in the team.

Amidst an intense football career, Takitaki found solace and support in his personal life. He married Alyssa Penney on June 14, 2016, in Sacramento, California. The unconditional love and backing from his wife have assisted him in balancing his personal life with the high demands of his professional football career.
