Born on September 17, 1995, in the city of Tyler, Texas, Patrick Lavon Mahomes II was always destined to have a life in sports. His father, Pat Mahomes Sr., was a former pitcher for Major League Baseball (MLB), and his mother, Randi Martin, was immensely supportive of his athletic pursuits. Although his parents divorced in 2006, Patrick continued to build a strong base in sports with their encouragement, attending Whitehouse High School in Texas, where he played football, basketball, and baseball.

Across his high school career, Patrick showcased exceptional athletic prowess that captured the attention of competitive leagues and teams. As a high school senior, he completed 4,619 passing yards and 50 passing touchdowns, indicating a promising future in football. Moreover, drawing from his father’s baseball legacy, he also delivered a scintillating no-hitter with 16 strikeouts during his final year at school.

His talent and performance made him a coveted recruit by multiple colleges. He eventually committed to Texas Tech University, choosing to continue with both football and baseball, but it was football that enthralled him more. Despite being a top prospect for the 2014 Major League Baseball draft, Patrick signed with the Detroit Tigers—though he never played a game, instead redirecting all his attention toward football.

And it was a decision that started to pay dividends soon. As a freshman at Texas Tech, Mahomes displayed a talent that was undeniable. He started his sophomore season as the main quarterback, breaking Big 12 freshman records and garnering attention from professional teams. On deciding to focus solely on football, Patrick began to excel even more dramatically. In his junior year, he achieved record-breaking performance with 5,052 passing yards and 53 total touchdowns.

Given his remarkable college career, it’s unsurprising that Patrick decided to forego his last year at Texas Tech and enter the 2017 NFL Draft. The decision turned out to be a sound one, as he was chosen tenth overall by the Kansas City Chiefs. Ascending to the role of starting quarterback in 2018, Mahomes demonstrated why he had earned the spot. Not only did he throw for a staggering 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns with only 12 interceptions, he also stood alongside Peyton Manning as the only quarterbacks in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards and 50 passing touchdowns in the same season. Such an achievement secured him NFL Offensive Player of the Year and NFL Most Valuable Player awards.

Through his prolific performance, Patrick continually guided the Kansas City Chiefs to historical heights – making multiple appearances in the AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl. Despite enduring a loss in their second consecutive Super Bowl appearance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mahomes’ success continued. In the 2022 season, he clinched his second NFL MVP and his second Super Bowl MVP—a first since Kurt Warner in 1999.
