Myles Garrett's Biography

Myles Lorenz Garrett was born on December 29, 1995, and quickly would become widely known as one of the most impressive athletes in recent American sports history. Today, Myles is a professional American football player who takes the position as the defensive end for the Cleveland Browns in the National Football League (NFL). However, his journey to this point is a rich tapestry interwoven with athletic talent, hard work, and an unwavering ambition to succeed.

Myles was raised in Arlington, Texas, where from a young age, he displayed prowess in sports. He attended Martin High School, earning his reputation on football, basketball, and track fields. Notably, he made a significant impact in football, recording 19.5 sacks in his senior year. His talent earned him the Landry Award in 2013, a prestigious accolade given to the top high school player in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Rivals.com, a leading college sports recruiting network, had Myles rated as a five-star recruit and listed as the second-best overall player in his class. In the world of track and field, Myles equally shone, as he qualified for state competitions in the throwing events and delivering top-throws of 16.01 meters in the shot put and 50.84 meters in discus throwing.

In 2013, after an intense recruitment process, Myles committed to Texas A&M University, where his trajectory further soared. Upon joining the university’s squad, Myles was already the #2 overall prospect in the nation. As a true freshman in 2014, Myles broke the university’s freshman sack record of 5.5 in just six games. Throughout the season, he solidified his status by recording 11.5 sacks, the second-highest in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), 53 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hurries, and a blocked kick. Myles’ handiwork earned him widespread recognition as the Freshman All-American by USA today, and Freshman All-SEC selection.

During his sophomore year, Myles led the SEC with 12.5 sacks, recorded 57 total tackles; 19.5 tackles for loss; five forced fumbles; and a blocked punt. These impressive performances earned him the Bill Willis Award, recognizing him as the top defensive lineman. Myles continued to thrive in his junior year, despite injuries, and still managed to deliver eight sacks, 32 total tackles, 15.0 tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, and a pass breakup. By the end of the year, he was voted the Unanimous Consensus All-American by prestigious football institutions such as the Football Writer’s Association of America, and the American Football Coaches Association among others.

Deciding to forgo his remaining eligibility in college football, Myles declared his intention to enter the 2017 NFL draft. He walked into the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, performing impressively in the majority of the combine drills. Myles’ excellent performance solidified his place as a top ten pick, so it was no surprise that he was picked by the Cleveland Browns as the first overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Upon joining the Cleveland Browns, Myles was immediately slated into the position of the starting defensive end, and his performance was astonishing. However, his debut season was marred with a high ankle sprain in practice, causing him to miss the start of the regular season. Despite this setback, Myles made a comeback, recording 31 combined tackles and seven sacks in just eleven games.

His hard work eventually paid off in 2018 when he earned his first Pro Bowl nomination. The following year, despite some disciplinary issues on the field, Myles excelled in his games against Titans, Jets, and Seahawks, earning various accolades. However, in November 2019, an on-field fight put him under indefinite suspension by the NFL until February 2020.

Following his reinstatement, he signed a five-year, $125 million contract extension in mid-2020. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Myles continued to deliver sterling performances, leading to his selection to the Pro Bowl and gaining him a position on the 2020 All-Pro Team.
