Born on September 4, 1996, Shaquan Montez Sweat emerged from Stone Mountain, Georgia to become an acclaimed professional football player in the National Football League (NFL). Known as a formidable defensive end for the Chicago Bears, his journey through the sport extends from high school games to college stints and soaring into professional play. His skills shone early in his life, displaying promising talent that engineered his path to the NFL.

Sweat’s football career began in his teenage years at Stephenson High School in his hometown. His exceptional performance on the gridiron earned him a reputation as one of the country’s top defensive ends. Ultimately, his high school successes led to his admissions to Michigan State University on a football scholarship.

In 2014, Sweat graced the football field for Michigan State, playing two games where he triumphantly recorded a sack. The following year, he redshirted. 2016 brought change as Sweat left Michigan State for newer pastures at Copiah–Lincoln Community College in Mississippi and also played for its team. His college career continued in 2017 where he joined the Mississippi State Bulldogs, further honing his football skills on another turf.

At Mississippi State, Sweat truly showcased his talent. In his debut season, he accumulated 10.5 sacks, earning him a place on the 2017 All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) football team. As a senior, he furthered his stature by recording 12 sacks in 2018, resulting in another All-SEC team induction and an All-American accolade.

Heading to the 2019 NFL Combine, Sweat shattered a long-standing record. Sprinting the 40-yard dash in 4.41 seconds became the fastest time for a defensive lineman at the event. However, his physical examination brought concerning news. A diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy became a potential career barrier, but it was later determined to be a misdiagnosis.

Sweat entered the 2019 NFL Draft, where he was eagerly selected by the Washington Redskins in the first round. He signed his four-year rookie contract raking in an impressive $11.6 million, inclusive of a $6.4 million signing bonus. His professional debut was against the Chicago Bears and recorded his first career sack.

Over the ensuing years, Sweat made significant contributions to the Redskins. This included a stellar performance against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving in 2020, where he intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. As with any athlete, Sweat faced challenges like a jaw fracture during a game in 2021 which landed him on injured reserve, followed shortly by a stint on the COVID-19 reserve list due to a positive test. His contracts fifth-year option was exercised by the team, then known as the Commanders, in April 2022.

Sweat continued his growth as a player, with impressive performances against the Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans. His time with the Commanders ended when he was traded to the Chicago Bears in October 2023. This move brought renewed excitement as Sweat penned a four-year contract extension worth an overwhelming $98 million, including $72 million guaranteed. Debuting for the Bears, he recorded his first sack and finished the season with a career-best 12.5 sacks.

Upon his stellar performances, he was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in January 2024. A noteworthy achievement was leading both the Commanders and Bears in sacks, a first in NFL history. His impact at the Bears, known as the “‘Tez effect,” was crucial in propelling his team to generate more sacks, quarterback pressures, and turnovers.

Away from the football field, Sweat’s life has some poignant moments. Raised by his grandparents, Sweat endured the loss of his mother and older brother, both in 2021. His off-field activities include appearances in Old Spice commercials, capturing the charm of his personality.
