Matt Ioannidis's Biography

Matthew Ioannidis, an American former professional football player, was born on January 11, 1994. His career as a defensive tackle spanned seven seasons in the National Football League (NFL). This seasoned player’s journey began in college, where he played football at Temple University before entering the professional world of sports. Ioannidis will be long remembered for his time with teams such as the Washington Redskins and the Carolina Panthers.

Ioannidis was raised in the Ringoes section of Raritan Township, New Jersey. He attended Hunterdon Central Regional High School, where he nurtured his athletic prowess. Born middle in a family of three boys, Matthew or Matt, as he is occasionally referred to, has two brothers named Andrew and Kevin. They often played football, basketball, and lacrosse together, laying the foundations for Matt’s future sports career.

Between 2012 and 2015, Ioannidis further refined his skills at Temple University, playing college football. This journey climaxed in 2016, when he was selected by the Washington Redskins in the fifth round, 152nd overall, of the 2016 NFL draft. His time at the Redskins was initially fraught with hiccups; he was waived by the team on September 3, 2016. Realizing the potential in him, the team re-engaged him with their practice squad a day later. Subsequently, he was promoted to the active roster following an injury to Kedric Golston.

Ioannidis made a remarkable NFL debut on September 25, 2016, contributing to a 29–27 win against the New York Giants. Throughout his rookie season, he appeared in ten games, during which he made seven tackles. Over the next two years, he continued to make an indelible mark, playing in 14 games, starting nine, and recording 31 combined tackles with 7.5 sacks in 2018. This performance made him the team’s third-best performer that year.

On April 18, 2019, the Redskins rewarded him with a three-year, $21.75 million contract extension. In the same year, Ioannidis had a new round of career highs with 64 tackles, 8.5 sacks, and one pass deflection.

His career, however, hit a temporary roadblock during the third week of the 2020 season. A game against the Cleveland Browns resulted in a torn bicep, leading to his placement on injured reserve. Despite this, he managed seven tackles and 1.5 sacks across three games that season. In November of the same year, he tested positive for COVID-19, which led to him being placed on the team’s COVID-19 reserve list. He moved back to the injured reserves after his recovery.

Unfortunately, on December 15, 2021, Ioannidis found himself back on the COVID-19 reserve list. However, he was reactivated five days later.

On March 16, 2022, he parted ways with the Redskins. Two days later, he agreed to terms with the Carolina Panthers. Ioannidis continued to make significant strides in his career with the Panthers.

By September 2024, the ex-NFL player had shifted gears, choosing to impart his knowledge to others. He took up a position at Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School, serving as an assistant defensive line coach. This move marked a crucial shift from being a professional football player to a mentor, guiding young players in the sport he had dedicated his life to.
