Al’Malik Demichia Herring, more popularly known as Malik Herring, was born on November 9, 1997, in Forsyth, Georgia, and he is an American professional football player. A robust and determined athlete, Herring has relentlessly pursued his passion for football throughout his life, ultimately rising through the ranks to secure his position as a defensive end for the Kansas City Chiefs in the National Football League (NFL).
Herring’s football journey began at Mary Persons High School in his hometown, where he displayed extraordinary skills that led him to become a four-star recruit after his graduation. After receiving recruiting offers from more than 20 schools, the talented freshman chose to play college football at the University of Georgia.
During his freshman year in 2017, Herring’s talent began to shine through his relentless performance in all 15 games played. He recorded seven total stops, showcasing his technique and integrity on the field. By the following year, his performance had only improved, whereby he ended the year with 24 stops and two assisted sacks after appearing in 14 games.
Herring’s junior year saw him engage in 12 out of 14 games with nine of them as a starter. His unparalleled growth and improvement in the defensive line were noted, leading to him receiving Georgia’s “Defensive Most Improved Player Award” that season. As a senior, Herring maintained his stellar role as starting defensive end for eight out of ten games and finished the year with 20 tackles.
Despite his impressive college football career, Herring faced a setback when he went unselected in the 2021 NFL draft. However, exhibiting resilience, he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Kansas City Chiefs. Due to a torn ACL sustained in practice for the college Senior Bowl, Herring began his professional career on the reserve/non-football injury list.
In 2022, Herring fully bounced back and secured a position in the Chiefs’ final roster as the sixth defensive end. He made his initial debut in the NFL in week three, earning two tackles in the match that resulted in a close 20-17 loss against the Indianapolis Colts. Despite the early setback, Herring tasted victory when the Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles with a thrilling 38–35 scoreline.
In 2023, Herring’s statistics included 10 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 pass defensed, as he concluded the year on a high note. The Chiefs made it to Super Bowl LVIII, where they scored a victory against the San Francisco 49ers, ending the game at 25-22. Herring contributed to the win by recording one crucial tackle.
