James Empey's Biography

James Empey is an esteemed American football center currently positioned as a free agent. Born on October 27, 1996, Empey has devoted his life to the game of football, having experienced a profound journey in the sport, from college level to the National Football League (NFL). His pathway in football began in Utah, moving his way up to notable teams such as the Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins, and the Green Bay Packers.

Empey spent his youthful years in American Fork, Utah, where he began his introduction into football. During his high school years at American Fork High School, he harnessed his talent and decided to take his passion for the sport to the next level. After graduating, Empey committed his skills to the University of Utah to play college football, signing a binding agreement to play for them.

Before venturing into college football, Empey undertook a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lisbon, Portugal. This missionary experience defined a significant part of his early adulthood, following which he embarked on his college career.

Returning from Portugal, Empey joined Brigham Young University (BYU), tying in with his religious faith as a Latter-day Saint. An interesting facet of his time at BYU was that his father was an assistant coach there during his tenure. Empey then redshirted his true freshman season at BYU, suggesting he delayed his participation in order to extend his period of playing eligibility. From there, he shot to prominence as the Cougars’ starting center for his redshirt freshman season.

Empey exhibited extraordinary prowess on the field, starting every game he played for them, spanning across four years. His impeccable performance awarded him the title of Freshman All-American selection. However, his time at BYU came to an end when he declared for the NFL Draft, bidding adieu to the university with one year of eligibility left.

Empey’s venture into the NFL began on a rocky note as he went undrafted in the 2022 NFL draft. Undeterred, his perseverance paid off when he was signed with the Dallas Cowboys on April 30, 2022. However, the stint was short-lived as he was waived by the Cowboys on August 28, 2022.

Undeterred by the setback, Empey was signed to the Miami Dolphins practice squad on September 1, 2022. He experienced a stride of success when he was entered into the team’s active roster on December 3, 2022. His time at the Miami Dolphins came to a close he signed with the Tennessee Titans on May 15, 2023. However, this tenure was short-lived as he was waived on July 28.

Empey was claimed off waivers by the Green Bay Packers on July 31, 2023, post his stint with the Titans. Following the NFL’s customary protocol, after release at the end of the training camp, Empey was allocated to the team’s practice squad, only to be released on September 1, 2023.

Returning to the Titans, Empey was signed to their practice squad on December 19, 2023. However, he was not signed to a reserve/future contract and his contract expired at season-end, leaving him as a free agent.
