BIOGRAPHY
J’Kaylin Dobbins, widely known for his talent on the football field, was born on December 17, 1998. Known as a formidable player in the National Football League (NFL), he plays as a professional running back for the Los Angeles Chargers.
Long before he became an important part of the Chargers, Dobbins got his start in football at a young age in La Grange, Texas, where he attended La Grange High School. Here in the early days of his career, he planted the seeds of his future success by earning an impressive 5,149 yards and reaching the end zone 74 times. More glory was to follow as Dobbins racked up 2,243 yards with 37 touchdowns as a sophomore and 2,740 yards with 35 touchdowns in his junior year. There was a brief break in his high school football journey due to an injury which resulted in him participating in only one game during his senior year.
Despite the setback, Dobbins, a blossoming four-star prospect, continued to impress many, even receiving over twenty scholarship offers from Power Five conferences. His skills attracted an abundance of attention that led to him being ranked in the top five for his position and in the top ten for players from his home state of Texas in 2017. In addition, platforms such as ESPN.com and 247Sports ranked him as a top-50 recruit in the country.
When the time came for him to choose a college, there was much speculation about where Dobbins would go. He faced pressure, expectations, and rumors linking him with a future at Texas or Oklahoma. However, he made the surprising decision to commit to Ohio State University to continue his passion for football.
Once a Buckeye, Dobbins took little time to adjust to the collegiate level. In his first game wearing Ohio State’s colors, he amassed 181 yards on 29 carries against Indiana. He proved to be a revelation as the season progressed, securing more than 100 rushing yards in six games. This made him one of four freshmen in Ohio State’s storied history to hit the 1,000-yard rushing mark in a single season. His crowning moment came in the Big Ten Football Championship Game when he rivaled Maurice Clarett’s record for the most rushing yards by a freshman.
However, despite his record-setting performance in the 2017 season, in his sophomore year, he had to share playing time with Mike Weber. This, coupled with an excellent performance by Dwayne Haskins at quarterback, led to a slight dip in his productivity, but he still clocked over a thousand yards.
In 2019, his junior year, Dobbins carried high expectations on his shoulders — and he did not disappoint. His tireless work ethic and innate ability led him to gain over 100 yards in ten games. He etched his name into the annals of Ohio State history, becoming the only Buckeye to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a single season, surpassing the legendary Eddie George. His spectacular season didn’t go unnoticed, earning him a place as a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, and he finished sixth for the Heisman Trophy.
On December 30, 2019, Dobbins decided to opt out of his senior season at Ohio State and declare for the 2020 NFL draft. He left the Buckeyes having rushed for a whopping 4,459 yards, making him the second all-time in school history.
Dobbins’ NFL journey began with the Baltimore Ravens when he was selected with the 55th overall pick in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. He had a solid start to his NFL career, with seven carries for 22 yards and two touchdowns in his debut game against the Cleveland Browns. However, his journey hit a roadblock when he suffered a torn ACL in a preseason game against the Washington Football Team in 2021 and was placed on injured reserve.
After an arduous journey of recovery and rehabilitation, Dobbins was finally cleared for full-time starter duty. However, the joy turned to despair as he suffered another knee injury and was placed on injured reserve once again on October 22, 2022, only to return in December the same year. But the cycle of injuries was far from over. In a Week 1 game against the Houston Texans, Dobbins suffered a torn Achilles tendon and was ruled out for the season.
Despite his series of unfortunate injuries, Dobbins never let his spirits falter. He began the next chapter of his career with the Los Angeles Chargers after he signed a one-year contract with them in 2024. Showing the world that he was far from finished, Dobbins shone in the 2024 season opener under new head coach Jim Harbaugh, rushing 10 times for 135 yards and a touchdown to help his team secure a 22–10 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. His career is testament to his resilience, strength, and determination to prevail even in the face of adversity.
