Foster Sarell's Biography

Foster Dane Sarell was born in Tacoma, Washington, on August 28, 1998, and bred to become the American professional football offensive tackle for the Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League (NFL). His path through football led him from Graham-Kapowsin High School to Stanford for college and then to the national spotlight as an undrafted free agent for the Baltimore Ravens in 2021.

Having anchored his high school football team’s line thrice as the lineman of the year, Sarell rose to local prominence with all-area, all-state, all-league, and All-American titles to his name. His skills displayed on the field named him the league’s MVP in 2016, turning heads on a national level when he was awarded first-team International Sports Press Association’s All-USA participant in the same year. Beyond football, Sarell also showcased his athletic versatility on the school’s track and field and basketball teams. His cumulative performance merited his top-ranking in the state and across the country, with some sources ranking him second nationally.

Football wasn’t his only claim to fame at Graham-Kapowsin High School—Sarell also succeeded academically, earning the High GPA Achievement Award all four years. His athleticism, coupled with his scholastic achievements, made him a five-star recruit.

Post high school graduation, Sarell committed to Stanford University, standing as one of the school’s premier recruits. Along for the ride were two other top prospects, quarterback Davis Mills and offensive lineman Walker Little. Sarell’s college football career commenced in the 2017 season, with him playing 14 games as a backup offensive lineman. It was the following year, his sophomore year that his playtime was cut short due to a sustained injury. The 2019 season saw him bounce back, featuring in all 11 games and securing a place on the All-Pac-10 Conference team as an honorable mention.

Sarell’s senior season in 2020, marred by COVID-19, saw him start all six games. Even though he was eligible for another playing year in 2021, he opted to declare for the NFL Draft.

Following the 2021 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens claimed Sarell as an undrafted free agent. A short stint with the Ravens concluded in August the same year, followed by a brief run with their practice squad and then ultimately release.

The New York Giants became Sarell’s NFL home next, where he joined their practice squad in September, only to be released at month-end. After his brief time with the Giants, he was signed as a practice squad member by the Los Angeles Chargers in October.

Sarell’s stay with the Chargers saw him signed to a future contract in January 2022, but he was cut during final roster cuts later in August. However, they welcomed him back to the practice squad shortly after. He debuted in the NFL for the Chargers against the Denver Broncos and marked his career-first start against the San Francisco 49ers, allowing just one sack.

As of November 26, Sarell officially signed on the Chargers’ active roster. His NFL career, fresh though it may be, has seen him make seven regular-season appearances, with three starts under his belt and a playoff game to his name.
