Devin Lloyd's Biography
Devin Eric Lloyd was born in San Diego, California on September 30, 1998. Known for his dedication and talent in football, Lloyd is a multifaceted player who has seen a progressive rise in his career. While his roots lay humble in the bustling city of Chula Vista, his dreams carried him to the heights of the National Football League, where he currently serves as a professional linebacker for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
As a child, Lloyd attended Otay Ranch High School in Chula Vista, California. Here, he became an integral part of the school’s football team, showcasing his skills in several positions, including wide receiver, safety, and punter. During his senior season, Lloyd proved indispensable as he demonstrated his versatility across the field. He made significant contributions on both sides of the line, catching 29 passes as part of the offensive unit and executing eight interceptions on defense. His proficiency as a punter was also noteworthy, with an average of 37.1 yards on 47 punts. One of his most remarkable performances occurred in a noteworthy victory over Eastlake High School, where he scored four interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns.
Despite his compelling performance in high school, Lloyd’s talents weren’t widely recognized, and he was graded as a three-star recruit. To pursue his passion for the game, Lloyd committed to the University of Utah, his only offer from a Power Five school. Although the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Colorado State University, San Jose State University, and Utah State University extended their offers to Lloyd, his heart was set on fighting alongside the Utah Utes.
When Lloyd first joined the university in 2017, he spent a year as a redshirt to develop his skillset. His hard work quickly paid off, and in the following year, he played every one of the Utes’ 14 games as a backup and accomplished six tackles. From there, Lloyd’s career took a turn for the positive as he moved up to a starting player in 2019. Throughout the season, he completed 91 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and even intercepted a pass, which he impressively returned for a touchdown.
Lloyd’s growth was consistent. During his junior year in 2020, he played five games and delivered a solid performance. He made 48 tackles and achieved two sacks. Despite being eligible for the NFL draft, Lloyd chose to return for his final year at the University of Utah in 2021.
During his senior year, Lloyd’s extraordinary performance earned him several achievements. He played in every one of the Utes’ 14 games and completed 66 tackles, became the Pac-12 leader with eight sacks, and achieved four interceptions. A thrilling moment was his pick-6 in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Due to his excellent performance, Lloyd was selected as a member of both the First-team all Pac-12 and the Consensus First-team All-American selection.
On January 13, 2022, Lloyd declared himself for the NFL draft. His dreams finally realized when he was picked 27th overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Lloyd lived up to his reputation, delivering an impactful debut performance that earned him the “Defensive Rookie of the Month” in September 2022. His exceptional performance included 24 tackles, six pass deflections, and two interceptions. His talent on the field even merited him a spot on the Pro Football Writers Association All-Rookie Team.
A lesser-known fact about Lloyd is that he hails from a military family. His parents, Joe Lloyd and Ronyta Johnson, have both served in the United States Navy. Beyond the football field, Lloyd maintains a steadfast faith and identifies as a Christian.
