Deshaun Watson

Derrick Deshaun Watson was born on September 14, 1995, in Gainesville, Georgia, to Deann Watson and Don Richardson. He attended Gainesville High School and eagerly started his football career, playing for the school’s Red Elephants football team. Under coach Bruce Miller, Watson went on to set several state records during his high-school career, including total yards, total touchdowns, career passing yards, and career passing touchdowns, amassing a total of 17,134 yards and 218 touchdowns, along with 13,077 passing yards and 155 passing touchdowns.

Showing exceptional prowess on the field, he had a successful junior year where he won a state championship, earning him accolades such as Junior All-American, 2014 Player to Watch, and 2014 Top 100 Recruit.

His college career began at Clemson University in 2014, after receiving offers from multiple colleges. At Clemson, Watson continued to demonstrate his talent and quickly established a reputation. His outstanding performance led Clemson to an undefeated regular season in 2015 and a number one ranking in the polls. After winning the ACC Championship, Watson received the ACC Championship Game MVP.

His excellence continued into the 2016 season, which saw Watson lead the Clemson Tigers to a national championship. His contributions to the successful season did not go unrecognized, and Watson was named as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

In 2017, following a successful college football career, Watson was selected by the Houston Texans in the first round of the NFL draft. Despite suffering a serious injury in his rookie year, he managed to guide the Texans to consecutive division titles in 2018 and 2019. He also led the league in passing yards in 2020 and has received Pro Bowl honors each season that he was the main quarterback for Houston.

However, controversy has mired his professional football career. In 2021, Watson was faced with over two dozen sexual harassment and assault lawsuits filed by female massage therapists. Despite denying all allegations, the lawsuits and disagreements with the Texans’ front office led to his absence for the entire 2021 season.

In 2022, a trade to the Cleveland Browns saw Watson sign a five-year contract worth $230 million, marking one of the largest contracts in NFL history. As of 2024, among his career statistics, he is ninth in career completion percentage with at least 1,500 attempts and has the third best all-time career passer rating.
