Early Years and Education

Born on April 15, 1998, Derrick Brown grew up in a family that embraced and nurtured his interest in sports. He attended Lanier High School in Georgia where he played football and was a four-star recruit. His intense dedication to the game did not deter him from his academic ambitions – something that has remained a constant in his life. After High School in 2016, he chose to attend Auburn University over several colleges that sought after him due to their robust football program and a firm commitment to their athlete’s academic success.

College Career and Professional Debut

From his freshman year at Auburn, Brown stepped on the field to demonstrate his immense potential. He played 13 games in his first year, recording 11 tackles and 1.5 sacks. His commitment was unwavering throughout his college years, a trait he consistently couples with his natural talent. This resulted in a sophomore and junior season that saw Brown amass 100 tackles and 10.5 sacks, showing his knack for making big plays.

During his senior year, he posted a personal college career-best of 55 total tackles, and won the Lott IMPACT Trophy, which honours college football’s Defensive best in character and performance. As an unequivocal leader, Brown also served as a team captain and was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2019.

Leading up to the 2020 NFL Draft, Brown was already being pegged as a top prospect. His exceptional athleticism, coupled with his leadership traits, had caught the eyes of pro scouts and analysts nationwide. Derrick Brown was then selected as the 7th overall pick for the Carolina Panthers, a move that would eventually kick-start his professional career.

NFL Career

Less than a month after draft night, he signed a four-year contract worth $23.621 million, including a $14.739 million signing bonus with the Panthers. His rookie season was undeniably impressive, where he played all 16 games and accumulated 34 total tackles, two sacks, and 12 quarterback hits. Even though he faced veterans who had much more experience, Brown held his own and more.
