Xavier Tillman's Biography

Xavier Justis Tillman Sr. is a well-known American professional basketball player, born on January 12, 1999. He is currently playing for the Boston Celtics of the esteemed National Basketball Association (NBA). Prior to this, he showcased his exceptional skills in college basketball for the Michigan State Spartans, winning numerous accolades and attention.

Growing up, Tillman was an active child who tried his hand in various sports, including baseball, soccer, football, and basketball. By the time he was 14, he stood 6 ft 5 in tall and eventually found his passion in football and basketball. He played Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball for the Grand Rapids Storm while he was a freshman at Grand Rapids Christian High School in Michigan.

During his high school years, he made a significant impact on the field. As a freshman, he averaged 13.9 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 4.3 blocks per game. By sophomore year, he was already leading his team to the regional semifinals with a 23–1 record, increasing his average to 15.5 points and 9.7 rebounds per game.

In the summer of 2015, Tillman made the decision to transfer to Grand Rapids Christian High School, looking for a more culturally diverse environment and a chance to refocus academically. However, this move was not without its controversy. A legal dispute ensued between his parents over this transfer, but in August, he was cleared to transfer. Despite a one-semester delay due to transfer rules, Tillman averaged 16 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists in his junior campaign, leading his team to win conference and district titles.

As a high school senior, he averaged 13.9 points, 10.9 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 4.2 blocks per game, guiding his school to a Class A state championship game appearance. He was named a finalist for the Mr. Basketball of Michigan award and received the Associated Press Class A First-Team All-State accolades.

Tillman was a top-rated four-star recruit and the best prospect in Michigan according to 247Sports. In 2016, he committed to play for Michigan State, citing the high level of competition and proximity to home as his reasons.

In college, Tillman lost significant weight to improve his conditioning, going from 276 pounds at the start of his freshman year to under 250 pounds by his sophomore season. As a junior, he took home the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the Second Team All-Big Ten.

After a successful college career, Tillman declared for the 2020 NBA draft and was drafted by the Sacramento Kings. However, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies on draft night. There, he recorded career-highs and helped the Grizzlies qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2017.

In 2023, Tillman scored a playoff-high 22 points with 13 rebounds and no turnovers in a win against the Los Angeles Lakers. The following year, he was traded to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Lamar Stevens and two-second round picks, helping the Celtics win the 2024 NBA Finals.

Off the court, Tillman is known as a devoted family man. He is the son of Roosevelt Tillman and Tanya Powell-May, the latter a college basketball player for Michigan. Tillman is blessed with three older brothers and a younger sister. His wife Tamia Tillman and their three children, Ayanna, Xavier Jr., and Leilani, make a joyful family.
