Willie Cauley-Stein

Willie Durmond Cauley Jr., known in the sports world as Willie Trill Cauley-Stein, was born on August 18, 1993. He is an accomplished American professional basketball player who last participated in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) and represented the Nanjing Monkey Kings. Willie, who was raised in the small city of Spearville, Kansas, has built his life through a passion for basketball, and his story unfolds how determination, resilience, and perseverance can change a person’s life.

Willie was brought up by his mother, Marlene Stein, and because of the absence of his father, Willie Cauley, his maternal grandparents, Norma and Val Stein, played a substantial role in his upbringing. Out of respect and love for them, he legally changed his surname from Cauley to Cauley-Stein.

Even as a high school freshman, Willie was notable because of his 6 feet 8 inch height. Through his sophomore year, he transferred to Olathe Northwest High School in Olathe, Kansas, where he discovered his love for basketball and football. Showcasing his growing prowess, he averaged 15.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game as a junior.

By 2012, respected sports resource Rivals.com hailed him as a four-star recruit, ranking him as the No. 9 center and the No. 40 player in the nation. That same year, he was deemed eligible to play varsity football, and he marked this milestone by helping his high school win a 7-on-7 football tournament held at the University of Kansas, earning himself a football scholarship.

Starting as a bench center at college with the Kentucky Wildcats, Willie was undeterred and ended up with impressive statistics during his initial year. He showcased his skills, averaging 7.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game, along with 63.9% field goal shooting.

Despite a promising start, Willie’s college career took a dramatic turn when Nerlens Noel, the top prospect who Willie was backing up, suffered a knee injury and had to retire for the season. This twist of fate brought Willie to the limelight as the team’s new starting center, a position he utilized to further polish his game.

In all, he had an impressive college career with three double-doubles in six games, including scoring 10 points and 11 rebounds against Georgia, in addition to 13 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks at Arkansas. His college career concluded with him participating in 37 games, marking 18 starts, and averaging 6.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks per game. Owing to his performance, the sophomore was named to the All-SEC Defensive Team.

Despite suffering a leg injury during the 2014 NCAA tournament and missing the rest of the season, Willie reaffirmed his commitment to his college team. He was designated a top-15 pick at the NBA draft that year but chose to return for his junior season, where he then earned the title of SEC Defensive Player of the Year.

April 9, 2015, was a game-changer for Willie, as on that day, he along with six other talented players declared their entry into the NBA draft. On June 25, the Sacramento Kings selected him as the sixth overall pick, and he debuted with them on October 28, 2015. His NBA journey extended to the Golden State Warriors in 2019, followed by the Dallas Mavericks in 2020 and then the Philadelphia 76ers, Houston Rockets, and Nanjing Monkey Kings in the subsequent years.

Although his NBA journey has been marked by highs and lows, including a 2021 ‘personal leave,’ Willie remains determined. He attributes all his success to his athletes-turned-parents: his father, who played college basketball at Dodge City Community College, the University of Pittsburgh, and his mother, who played college basketball for St. Mary of the Plains College. Having overcome his struggles with addiction, Willie aims to return to the NBA and is determined to serve as a role model for his family, including his child born in 2020.
