An athlete of unmatched caliber, Richardson’s illustrious career in the National Basketball Association (NBA) is marked by numerous accolades and appreciation.

As the passion for basketball took precedence in his life, Richardson cut his teeth as a player during his high school years at Santa Fe High School located in Edmond, Oklahoma. Playing as a point guard, he averaged 16.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.6 assists, with his exceptional skillset propelling him to the Oklahoma Coaches Association’s “Large West” All-State Team and also earning him a place in The Oklahoman’s Super 5 first team.

Following high school, Richardson played all four seasons at the University of Tennessee representing the Tennessee Volunteers. Throughout these four years, he played an impressive 136 career games and managed averages of 9.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists, with 45.6 percent field shooting. His time at the university placed him amongst the top players in school history, ranking him third in games played, ninth in minutes, ninth in starts, 10th in steals, 16th in blocks, and 28th in points.

Elevating his game with each passing season, Richardson’s senior year saw him average 16.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game earning first-team all-conference honors in southeastern conference. His impressive performances led him to be named to the First Team All SEC, SEC All-Defensive Team, and the Defensive All-American Team.

The 2015 NBA draft proved to be a milestone for Richardson as he got selected in the second round by the Miami Heat with the 40th pick, thereby, officially embarking on his professional basketball career. Despite facing struggles in the initial stages, including not being able to make it to the Heat’s first four games, Richardson managed to make his NBA debut on November 5 against the Minnesota Timberwolves. His early career years also had him assigned and recalled to and from the Sioux Falls Skyforce.

Season 2015-16 saw Richardson make significant strides such as scoring his first double-digit game, a career-high of 22 points in a win over the Chicago Bulls, and being named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for March, a feat only achieved by two other players in Heat’s history earlier.

Injury troubled Richardson in late 2016 when he partially tore the medial collateral ligament in his right knee. However, his resilience saw him bounce back to tie a career high of 22 points in a loss against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Richardson’s contract was extended with a four-year, $42 million deal with the Heat in 2017. The year saw him set and reset his career high points record several times, culminating in a career-high 37 points made and eight 3-pointers in a game in 2019.

In 2019 Miami traded Richardson to the Philadelphia 76ers as part of a package for Jimmy Butler. Later, he was traded to Dallas Mavericks and then Boston Celtics, with each season bringing unanticipated challenges and opportunities hardening him as a player. His journey came full circle when in July 2023, he re-signed with Miami Heat.

Richardson’s family includes his retired firefighter father, an Ordained Baptist minister and retired Lieutenant Colonel mother, and his older sister who played college basketball for the Oklahoma State Cowgirls.
