Yandy Diaz's Biography

Born on August 8, 1991, in Cuba, Yandy Díaz Fernández has since made a name for himself as a professional baseball player in the Major League Baseball (MLB). A versatile player, Díaz stands out both as a third baseman and first baseman. Currently, he plays for the Tampa Bay Rays and has formerly been a player for the Cleveland Indians.

Díaz’s genesis as a professional baseball player can be traced back to 2008 when he began his career with Naranjas de Villa Clara in the Cuban National Series. At a tender age of 16 years, Díaz managed to impress by registering two hits and two walks over seven plate appearances. He continued to excel in the following year, recording a commendable slash stat of .292/.417/.351 over 67 games and again .254/.399/.331 over 59 games in what would be his final season with Villa Clara. His absence from the roster for the 2012–13 season was felt as Villa Clara took home the championship.

In a bold move to further his career, Díaz, at 21 years old, defected from Cuba to the Dominican Republic in 2013. His journey wasn’t smooth, having faced detention twice during his previous attempts to defect. He was escorted by his childhood friend Leandro Linares and another anonymous associate. His journey bore fruit when, in August that year, he signed up with the Cleveland Indians for a whopping $300,000.

In 2014, Díaz played for the Carolina Mudcats of the High–A Carolina League. The next year, he achieved the milestone of All-Star status while playing for the Akron RubberDucks of the Double–A Eastern League. As his career flourished, the Indians promoted him to the Columbus Clippers of the Triple–A International League. He went on to win the International League Rookie of the Year Award.

During the Indians’ 2017 major league spring training camp, Díaz emerged as a formidable player batting .458 (22-for-48) with a 1.252 OPS. Injuries among his teammates facilitated his designation as the Indians’ starting third baseman for the 2017 season. He then played 49 games predominantly as a third baseman, underlining his importance to the Indians with a .262/.352/.327 slash stat.

Díaz oscillated between Columbus and the Cleveland Indians during the 2018 season, playing 39 games, hitting a home run, and driving in 15 runs. However, it was in December 2018 that a significant shift came in his career. He was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays where he scored 14 home runs and made 38 RBIs.

In 2019, Díaz was instrumental in the Rays’ victory against the Oakland Athletics in the American League Wild Card Game, hitting two decisive home runs. Although he battled a hamstring injury in September 2020, he still contributed significantly to his team, playing in 34 games and hitting 2 home runs.

Díaz’s performance continued to improve over time: in the 2022 season, he hit .296/.401/.423, and garnered MVP votes for the first time in his career. Recognizing his resilience and potential, the Rays extended his contract by three years for $24 million in January 2023. An immediate effect was evident when he hit a solo home run in his first at-bat during the 2023 All-Star Game, making him the first Cuban-born player to do so since Cookie Rojas in 1972.

Díaz’s personal life has been as eventful as his professional journey. He welcomed his first son, Yandy Jared Díaz, in July 2023. His father, Jorge, a former professional baseball player, left Cuba when Díaz was only six years old to play professional baseball in the U.S. Jorge was briefly associated with the Texas Rangers organization and then the independent leagues. Despite these early challenges, Díaz continued to strive and excel in his career. Today, he enjoys a successful career with the Rays, breaking records, and bringing glory to his team.
