Willard Carroll Smith II, known popularly across the globe as Will Smith, was born on September 25, 1968, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The son of Caroline, an educational board administrator, and Willard Carroll Smith Sr., a U.S. Air Force veteran and refrigeration engineer, his upbringing was steeped in a vigorous work ethic, intelligence, and resilience. Not limited by his humble beginnings in Philadelphia’s Wynnefield neighborhood, Smith found his passion early in music, beginning his rapping career at the tender age of 12.

Smith’s music career took off when he paired with his childhood friend, Jeffrey “DJ Jazzy Jeff” Townes.
