Teoscar José Hernández, an accomplished Dominican professional baseball outfielder, has been significant player in Major League Baseball (MLB) for more than a decade, leaving a deep mark on many teams including the Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, Seattle Mariners, and currently, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Born on October 15, 1992, Hernández boasts an impressive career that consisted of winning two Silver Slugger Awards and securing a spot as an All-Star in 2021 and 2024.

Hernández’s journey to professional baseball began in February 2011 when he inked a contract with the Houston Astros as an international free agent. His professional debut was during the same season, for the Dominican Summer League Astros. In 2012, he transitioned to the American teams, showcasing his talent with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast Astros, and the Class-A Lexington Legends of the South Atlantic League. His performance in the 59 games illustrated his potential, as he procured a .243 batting average, five home runs, 23 runs batted in (RBI), and 11 stolen bases.

His skillset continued to develop steadily, and by the 2013 season, he had become an integral player in the Class-A Quad City River Bandits, boasting impressive statistics like a .271 average, 13 home runs, 55 RBI, and 24 stolen bases. He further honed his game during the offseason by playing 23 matches with the Toros del Este in the Dominican Winter League.

In 2014, Hernández was playing with the Lancaster JetHawks of the Advanced-A California League. His consistent high-level performance led to his promotion to the Corpus Christi Hooks in the Double-A Texas League. He continued to shine, hitting .292 with 21 home runs, 85 RBI, and 33 stolen bases in 119 games.

Despite a stellar 2015 season with the Double-A Corpus Christi, Hernández experienced a dip in form, batting .219 with 17 home runs, 48 RBI, and stealing 33 bases in 119 games. However, there were still significant highlights as he was selected to represent the Dominican Republic national baseball team at the 2015 WBSC Premier12 tournament.

2016 was a turning point in Hernández’s career. After a spell with Corpus Christi, he was promoted to the Fresno Grizzlies of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League. Later in August, the Houston Astros propelled him into the major leagues—a well-deserved promotion. Against the Toronto Blue Jays, he made a remarkable debut as the starting center fielder, logging two hits in four at-bats and slamming his first big league home run off of Francisco Liriano. By the close of the 2016 season, he had hit .230 with four home runs and 11 RBI in 41 games.

Despite an initial sting in the tail—a collision with teammate José Altuve that put him on the disabled list—Hernández eventually enjoyed a successful 2017 season. The highlight, undoubtedly, was a move to the Toronto Blue Jays where a swap deal saw Francisco Liriano head to the Astros. Hernandez spent some time with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons initially, but it was not long before he spanned his wings on the field with the Blue Jays, and on September 10, he hit two home runs in one game against the Detroit Tigers—an incredible feat. By the end of the year, he had marked a .261 average with eight home runs and 20 RBIs in just 26 matches.

Hernández continued his run with the Blue Jays through 2018, and despite some initial challenges, he hit .239 with 22 home runs in 134 games during his first full Major League season. His 2019 season started off rocky, but he managed to flip the script and finished with a .230 batting average and 26 home runs in 125 games.

The 2020 season brought more recognition for Hernández as he earned the American League (AL) Silver Slugger Award for right field after batting .289 with 16 home runs and 34 RBIs in 50 games. He also made his post-season debut, contributing to the Jays’ efforts in the Wild Card Series.

2021 marked an even more transformative period in his career, earning his first All-Star game selection and setting new personal records with a .296 batting average, 32 home runs, and 116 RBIs. He also won the AL Silver Slugger for right field for the second consecutive year.

Despite these successes, 2022 brought a twist in Hernández’s career, as he was traded first to the Seattle Mariners, and then to the Los Angeles Dodgers a year later. However, these changes seemed to invigorate him, and in his first year as a Dodger, he blasted 26 home runs, notched up 93 RBI, got selected for the 2024 Major League Baseball All-Star Game for the second time, and even won the 2024 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby—the first player from the Dodgers to achieve this feat.
