Tarik Skubal

Tarik Daniel Skubal, an American professional baseball pitcher, was born on November 20, 1996. He currently plays for the Detroit Tigers in Major League Baseball (MLB), and his journey in the sport has been marked by both trials and tremendous triumphs. Born and raised in Kingman, Arizona, Skubal began his path in baseball at the local Kingman Academy of Learning before moving onwards to college.

His love for the sport led him to play college baseball for the Seattle Redhawks of Seattle University, which happened to be the only NCAA Division I school that extended a scholarship to him. However, his career faced an early setback in the form of injury that shook his career plans but did not deter his determination. Most of his 2016 season and all of 2017 were lost to Tommy John surgery, a common procedure for pitchers to repair a ligament in the elbow.

Despite this significant factor, Skubal was still picked by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 29th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft. Although he did not sign with them and returned to Seattle instead. His true breakthrough came in the following year when he was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the ninth round of the 2018 MLB draft. A professional contract with the team ensued, marking the beginning of his professional career.

For Skubal’s rookie season, he was assigned to three different teams in the Tigers system: Gulf Coast Tigers, Connecticut Tigers, and West Michigan Whitecaps. In a remarkable entry into professional play, he finished the season with an unblemished 3-0 record and a meager 0.40 ERA in over 22 innings pitched.

In the following year, Skubal proved his worth at the plate for the Lakeland Flying Tigers. His impressive performances resulted in a midseason call-up to the Erie SeaWolves. He started strong, posting a 0.56 ERA with 34 strikeouts and surrendering just five hits in his first 16 inning-stints with Erie. By the end of the season, he stood out in the Double-A level with a 2-3 record, a commendable 2.13 ERA, and a 1.02 WHIP.

In 2020, Skubal was extended an invitation by the Tigers to attend spring training. His debut in MLB was marked on August 18, 2020, and he recorded his first major league win 11 days later against the Minnesota Twins. He completed the 2020 season with 37 strikeouts in 32.0 innings pitched, maintaining a 1-4 record with a 5.63 ERA.

The following year, Skubal made an even more momentous stride in his career. He was instated in the Detroit Tigers’ starting rotation by the newly appointed team manager, A. J. Hinch. The highlights of the season included his 100th career strikeout in a July game against the Chicago White Sox and his ten strikeouts in an August game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

However, Skubal’s journey encountered a minor setback when he was placed on the injured list in August of 2022 after suffering from left arm fatigue. Further, he had to undergo flexor tendon surgery, and as a result, his 2022 season was prematurely truncated.

Despite this, Skubal made a triumphant return to the field when he was activated in July in the following year. His performance was impressive, leading to him being named American League Pitcher of the Month in September. His tenure with Tigers continued into 2024 when he started on Opening Day of the season. With such an impressive track record and an undying spirit, Skubal continues to rightfuly earn his place with the Detroit Tigers at the mound.

Off-field, Skubal is very much embedded in his heritage, with a support system in his father, Russ who is a principal in Kingman, Arizona, and his three brothers: Treyvor, Tyler, and Trent. As he continues his illustrious career in Major League Baseball, Skubal sets an inspiring testament to the power of determination, resilience and continuous hard work.
