Sonny Gray's Biography

Sonny Douglas Gray was born on November 7, 1989 in Nashville, Tennessee. Throughout his career, Gray has established himself as a dynamic force within major league baseball. Excelling as a professional baseball pitcher, Gray has played for several teams including the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, Minnesota Twins, and is currently a player in the St. Louis Cardinals.

Born to parents Cindy and Jesse Gray, Sonny Gray’s early childhood was spent in Nashville before relocating to Smyrna, Tennessee. His journey into baseball began at a young age, with his first innings pitched at Smyrna High School. Tragedy struck when Gray’s father passed away in a car accident during his freshman year. Despite this immense personal setback, Gray continued to persevere and excel in his athletic pursuits. It was at this juncture he began his commendable journey into the world of baseball.

Throughout his schooling, he emerged as a significant player. As a freshman he was named Freshman of the Year in District 9AAA, carving out his reputation as a remarkable and formidable player. Despite some minor injuries plaguing his sophomore year, Gray returned strong during his junior year, carrying his team to the 2007 State Tournament with an impressive 11–2 win–loss record and a 0.95 earned run average (ERA).

He further stamped his mark in the field when his exceptional performances earned him a spot in the AFLAC All-American High School Baseball Classics. Along with this, he was also nominated for National Player of the Year. His final years in high school were as fruitful. He maintained an outstanding 4–0 score with a 0.79 ERA and showed excellent statistics at the plate with a batting average of over .500 in his last two seasons.

In addition to his baseball achievements, Gray also showcased his ability as a competent quarterback for Smyrna’s football team, guiding his team to achieve back-to-back 5A State titles in 2006 and 2007. Recognized for his all-around athletic prowess, Sonny Gray was awarded the Gatorade Player of the Year by The Tennessean in both 2007 and 2008.

Gray, after committing to Vanderbilt University, was picked in the 27th round by the Chicago Cubs during the 2008 MLB Draft. However, he decided not to sign with the team. As a freshman at Vanderbilt University, he started his journey in college baseball as a relief pitcher, but he gradually rose into a starter role. Over the years, Gray highlighted his growth and potential, displaying considerable improvements in his earned run average.

The pinnacle of Gray’s college baseball journey was his junior year, finishing the year with an impressive record of 12–4, 2.43 ERA, and 132 strikeouts. He was a significant contributor to the Vanderbilt Commodores’ first-ever College World Series berth, although the team eventually lost during the semifinals to Florida.

Gray soon found himself stepping into the professional arena when he was picked 18th overall by the Oakland Athletics during the 2011 MLB Draft, electing to forgo his senior year at Vanderbilt. After signing up with Oakland for a hefty $1.54 million bonus, he began his play with the Midland RockHounds of the Class AA Texas League. Starting the 2013 season with the Sacramento River Cats, Gray marked a new chapter in his career with the Athletics.

His time with the Oakland Athletics marked several career highs and significant moments. His MLB debut in 2013, earning the American League Pitcher of the Month Award twice in 2014, and being named an MLB All-Star in 2015, 2019, and 2023 were all hallmarks of his time with the Athletics; these achievements underscored his rising prominence within the baseball community.

In 2017, Gray was acquired by the New York Yankees and subsequently traded to the Reds before the 2019 season.
