Patrick Corbin

Patrick Alan Corbin was born on July 19, 1989, in Clay, New York. A professional baseball pitcher, he has played for Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Arizona Diamondbacks and Washington Nationals. Corbin’s significant accomplishments include a 2019 World Series win with the Nationals, where he secured the victory in game 7.

Born to Dan Sr., a sausage company driver, and Patty, a nurse in a rehabilitation center for the elderly, Patrick Corbin was relatively late in choosing baseball as his primary sport. It was basketball that fueled his passion during his formative years. Corbin also participated in football through Pop Warner football and was a New York Yankees fan during his youth. His father, recognizing his son’s passion for sports, constructed a basketball court in their backyard.

At Cicero–North Syracuse High School (C-NS), Corbin did not join the baseball team until his junior year. Simultaneously, he was involved in basketball and football teams. It was his friends from the basketball team who convinced Corbin to give baseball a try. In his senior season at C-NS, Corbin achieved an 8–0 win-loss record as he switched focus from basketball to baseball. He also broke the school’s record for most three-point field goals in a single basketball game and was named to the All Section Basketball team following his senior season.

Corbin then proceeded to Mohawk Valley Community College and subsequently Chipola College, due to insufficient grades to enroll at a four-year college. Scouts from two MLB teams offered him a $75,000 signing bonus during his time at Mohawk. However, upon the advice of his coach, Corbin decided to wait another season before making the leap to professional baseball.

In 2009, Corbin’s standing in the baseball world rose dramatically. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim chose Corbin in the second round of the 2009 MLB draft. However, he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2010, as part of a deal for Dan Haren. Corbin accepted a $450,000 signing bonus from the Angels, forgoing his commitment to the University of Southern Mississippi.

Corbin’s MLB journey began with the Diamondbacks in 2012, and his solid performance earned him All-Star status in 2013. Unfortunately, this rising trajectory was interrupted by an injury to the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. The injury forced him to sit out the entire 2014 season.

Despite his absence from the field, 2015 saw Corbin return to the Diamondbacks in full swing, overcoming initial struggles. After recurring issues with performance and form, he found stability again in 2017 and finally got to represent the Diamondbacks as the Opening Day starter in 2018. His stellar play in 2018 earned All-Star status for the second time in his career.

Following the 2018 season, Corbin decided to explore new opportunities. He joined the Washington Nationals for the 2019 season after inking a six-year contract worth $140 million. Riding high on the momentum of success, Corbin secured the win in Game 7 of the 2019 World Series, leading the Nationals to their first-ever World Series championship.
