Mitchell Parker

Mitchell James Parker, born on September 27, 1999, is an accomplished professional baseball player from the United States, currently performing as a pitcher for the Washington Nationals, part of Major League Baseball (MLB). This career choice followed Mitch’s impressive debut in the MLB back in the year 2024. Growing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, his early life set the foundations for his future success, as he cultivated his innate proficiency in baseball at Manzano High School.

While Parker’s exceptional skills presented him with myriad opportunities to kickstart his professional baseball career, his first potential break came in 2018 when he was chosen during the 28th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Chicago Cubs. Despite being granted this chance, Parker chose not to sign with the Cubs. His journey, however, wasn’t set back by this decision and instead, he continued his development in baseball by playing at the junior college level at San Jacinto College.

In his freshman season with San Jacinto, the budding player showcased his prodigious talent, earning a flawless 6-0 record with an impressive 111 strikeouts, an ERA of 1.54, in over 64 innings across 13 starts. Such achievements did not go unnoticed – in the following year, the Tampa Bay Rays selected Parker during the 27th round of the Major League Baseball draft. However, similar to his decision with the Cubs, he decided to stay with San Jacinto for another year.

During his sophomore season, Parker maintained his outstanding form on the field, concluding the season with a 5-0 record before it was abruptly ended due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. Despite playing only six games, he held a 1.19 ERA and amassed 64 strikeouts in a bit over 30 innings.

As Parker’s prowess continued to impress on the field, he found himself once again selected in the Major League Baseball draft of 2020, this time by the Washington Nationals in the fifth round. Embracing the opportunity, he entered into a contract with the Nationals on June 23, 2020. His signing saw him awarded a generous $100,000 signing bonus and assigned to the Fredericksburg Nationals of Low-A East to commence the 2021 season.

Despite a challenging start with Fredericksburg, reflected in his score of 3-7 and a 4.08 ERA over 57+1⁄3 innings, his potential did not go unrecognized. He was promoted to a higher league, the High-A Wilmington Blue Rocks on July 13, 2021. Parker ended the season with an overall 4-12 record and a 4.87 ERA, striking out 144 in over 101 innings.

Following the season, on November 14, 2023, Parker was not only added to the Nationals’ 40-man roster for protection against the Rule 5 Draft but also optioned to the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings, marking the onset of the 2024 season. His impressive performance led to his promotion to the major leagues, which took place on April 15, 2024, marking a vital milestone in his professional baseball career. Therein, he replaced Amos Willingham on the active roster.

Parker’s major league debut involved him being a starting pitcher in a match against the Dodgers on Jackie Robinson Day. He pitched for five innings with three strikeouts, ultimately aiding in his team’s victory. In his second career outing, he continued his stellar performance, playing a home game against the Astros. Parker pitched for seven innings, executing eight strikeouts, and ensuring not a single run was given up, highlighting his growing command and expertise in the field.
