Merrill Kelly

In the realm of American professional baseball, one name that frequently crops up is that of Kenneth Merrill Kelly. Born on October 14, 1988, Kelly is most well-known as a prodigious baseball pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks, part of the esteemed Major League Baseball (MLB). His substantial baseball career includes an exciting debut on the MLB stage on 1st April 2019. Before he became part of the Diamondbacks, Kelly exhibited his adroit baseball skills for the SK Wyverns, an eminent baseball team part of the KBO League in Korea.

From a tender age, Kelly was exposed to the mesmerizing world of baseball, courtesy of his upbringing in different parts of the United States. His journey saw him reside in Lake Forest, Illinois, from third to eighth grade, before he relocated to Bryn Mawr, an enchanting suburb in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The final leg of his early years was spent in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he honed his baseball prowess while attending Desert Mountain High School.

Following completion of his high school education, Kelly became the focus of the Baltimore Orioles, a renowned MLB team that selected him during the 37th round of the 2007 MLB draft. However, Kelly decided to not sign a contract with them, and instead chose to further his education at Yavapai College. His two-year stint playing college baseball for Yavapai saw an increase in interest for him in the MLB circles. The Cleveland Indians picked him during the 22nd round of the 2009 MLB draft, but just like before, Kelly decided not to sign and chose to transfer to Arizona State University instead. In 2010, Kelly’s baseball career saw an uptick while playing for the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Destiny brought Kelly to the Tampa Bay Rays, who selected him during the eighth round of the 2010 MLB draft. As a Rays player, Kelly scaled up one minor league level each season, heading on a remarkable journey from Low-A in 2010 to Triple-A in 2013 for the first time. Between 2010 to 2013, Kelly played for various teams, including the Hudson Valley Renegades, the Bowling Green Hot Rods, the Charlotte Stone Crabs, and the Montgomery Biscuits. His amazing records and impressive pitching mechanics landed him a spot as a non-roster invitee to the 2014 Spring Training, although he did not make it to the Opening Day roster.

Beyond 2014, Kelly decided to tread international waters, signing a contract with South Korea’s SK Wyverns. During his four seasons with the team, Kelly shone, climaxing in a triumphant 2018 Korean Series win. His crucial seven innings in Game 3, which culminated in allowing only two runs, were instrumental to the series win. However, Kelly chose to seek new opportunities as a free agent after the 2018 season.

In December 2018, the MLB’s Arizona Diamondbacks signed Kelly on a two-year major league contract. The next year, he made his major league debut and subsequently led the National league in losses with 14, while also leading the Diamondbacks in wins (13) and innings (183+1⁄3) in his inaugural season. Kelly’s performance saw some fluctuation. After a shoulder injury in the 2020 season, Kelly’s 2021 season ended with a 7–11 record over 27 starts.

April 1, 2022, marked a crucial juncture in Kelly’s career, as he signed a two-year, $18 million contract extension with the Diamondbacks. He began the 2022 season with a record, only falling short of the franchise record by three. He was recognized as the National League Pitcher of the Month in July 2022 and won the National League Player of the Week Award.

Game 2 of the 2023 World Series saw Kelly claim a record by pitching seven innings with nine strikeouts and no walks. This performance aided the Diamondbacks in winning that game, making Kelly the first player to win games in both the World Series and Korean Series.

In 2024, Kelly continued as part of Arizona’s rotation, only to be placed on the injured list due to a muscle strain. After a few months, he returned to the field on August 11. On October 6, 2022, Kelly announced his representation of the United States national baseball team in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, despite suffering a loss in the championship game against Japan.

Kelly’s personal life flourishes in harmony with his professional life. Kelly and his wife, Bre, welcomed their first child, a girl named Hadley, in February 2022. Kelly continues to dominate the realm of professional baseball, inspiring thousands with his commendable journey and love for the sport.
