Joshua Edward Lowe, an American professional outfielder of the Tampa Bay Rays Major League Baseball (MLB) team, was born on February 2, 1998. For him, the path to professional baseball started in his early days at Pope High School in Marietta, Georgia, where he showcased his skills, primarily as a third baseman and occasionally as a pitcher. As a senior, Lowe became the Georgia Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year after achieving a .391 batting average with 11 home runs and 39 runs batting in (RBIs).

Due to his impressive performance, Lowe received and accepted an offer to play college baseball for the Florida State Seminoles. However, his journey quickly took a turn towards Major League Baseball. In the 2016 MLB draft, the Tampa Bay Rays decided to give Lowe a chance, selecting him as their 13th pick in the first round. He readily signed with the Rays and embarked on the beginning of his professional career.

Lowe’s inaugural professional season saw him playing for both the Gulf Coast League Rays and the Princeton Rays. Over 54 games with both teams, he achieved a combined batting average of .249, notched five home runs, and brought in 26 RBIs. In 2017, Lowe played for the Bowling Green Hot Rods, achieving a .268 batting average, eight home runs, 55 RBIs, and 22 stolen bases in 118 games. From the beginning of this season, he transitioned exclusively to the outfielder position. Lowe’s innate talent for baseball continued to garner attention in 2018 when he played 105 games with the Charlotte Stone Crabs, hitting six home runs and recording 47 RBIs.

In 2019, Lowe started his season with the Montgomery Biscuits and was later selected to showcase his talent in the Arizona Fall League for the Salt River Rafters. On November 20, 2020, Lowe was added to the 40-man roster, a significant milestone in his career. For the 2021 season, he was assigned to the Triple-A Durham Bulls. During the 111 games he played for Durham, Lowe established an impressive record with a slash line of .291/.381/.535, 22 home runs, 78 RBI, and 26 stolen bases.

On September 8, 2021, Lowe tasted the glory of being called up to the MLB for the first time. In his debut game, he managed to get a walk and a stolen base before obtaining his first-ever career hit—a single off of Boston Red Sox’s starter Nathan Eovaldi. By April 2022, Lowe had already hit his first career home run off Dylan Bundy, then with the Minnesota Twins, and had appeared in 52 games for the Rays, hitting .221/.284/.343 with 2 home runs and 13 RBI.

Lowe’s family has a deep-rooted association with baseball. His brother, Nathaniel Lowe, plays for the Texas Rangers. The two were teammates in Bowling Green before Nate was promoted to the High-A Charlotte Stone Crabs. His father, David, was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 1986 MLB Draft. However, instead of pursuing baseball, David attended the U.S. Naval Academy and subsequently became a Naval Aviator and career fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy.

Interestingly enough, despite having the same last name, Joshua is not related to Brandon Lowe, a fellow Tampa Bay Rays player who was drafted a year before Joshua. This similarity has caused some confusion over the years, but the two stand as separate forces of the Rays’ roster. To this day, Joshua Lowe continues to demonstrate his prowess on the MLB field, justifying why he’s considered one of America’s professional baseball stars.
