Cristopher Sanchez

Cristopher Alexis Sanchez was born in the Dominican Republic on December 12, 1996. His passion for baseball quickly became apparent and his exceptional pitching skills steered his career as a professional baseball pitcher in the major league. He gained national and international attention when he signed with the Tampa Bay Rays on an international free agent contract which fetched him a significant signing bonus of $65,000. He devoted the years 2014, 2015, and 2016 to the DSL Rays, showing a consistent improvement in his performance with each passing year.

In 2014, he recorded a 7.77 ERA over 22 innings, but despite his unremarkable initial performance, Sanchez’s ambition did not falter. His perseverance paid off as results started showing by the year 2015, when he had a 3.54 ERA over 20 1/3 innings. His rise continued unswerving as the 2016 season saw him score a 3.06 ERA over 61 2/3 innings.

Despite a rough patch in 2017 (where Sanchez went 1-6 with a 10.01 ERA), his subsequent string of performance in 2018 and 2019 demonstrated his resilience and potential as a professional player. He spent these years between Princeton Rays, Hudson Valley Renegades, Bowling Green Hot Rods, Charlotte Stone Crabs, and Durham Bulls. His overall performance for the 2018 and 2019 seasons, with ERAs of 4.50 and 2.26 respectively, signified his emerging talent on the baseball field. His participation in the 2019 WBSC Premier12 further fortified his reputation as he represented the Dominican Republic national baseball team.

A significant turn of fortune occurred on November 20, 2019 when Sanchez was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in favor of Curtis Mead. The trading brought about a significant shift in Sanchez’s career as he found himself added to the Phillies’ 40-man roster. The unprecedented cancellation of the 2020 Minor League Baseball season owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, marked a potential downer on his climbing career. Yet, Sanchez did not lose his momentum as he was eventually promoted to the major leagues in April 2021.

His first call to the major leagues was short-lived as he was sent back to minor leagues the very next day. A similar incident occurred in May; however, his continuous relocation did not deter his spirit. Finally, on June 6, 2021, Sanchez got his grand break when Chase Anderson and David Hale were placed on the COVID list. This left Phillies’ bullpen challenged for depth and opened the door for Sanchez into the Major Leagues.

As Sanchez was recalled, he made his debut on the same day. His delivery struck out two batters in the concluding 1 1/3 innings in a thrilling 12-6 win against the Washington Nationals. The promising debut raised expectations for Sanchez, and true to the anticipations, by June 2023, he became a regular part of the Phillies’ rotation.

The young star made his postseason debut against the Arizona Diamondbacks in October 2023. Despite lasting only 2 1/3 innings in Game 4 of the NLCS, Sanchez continued being an invaluable asset throughout the 2023 season. His statistics shone with a record of 3-5 and a 3.44 ERA along with 96 strikeouts across 99 1/3 innings pitched.

June 2024 brought Sanchez into significant limelight as he agreed on a four-year multi-million dollar contract extension with the Phillies. He fortified this high-value upgrading by throwing a victorious career-first complete game shutout against the Miami Marlins in the same month. Sanchez’s dazzling performance awarded him the title of Pitcher of the Month for June 2024. With three wins and zero losses, coupled with a commendable 1.64 ERA and 23 strikeouts across 33 innings, Sanchez proved he is undeniably a force to be reckoned and celebrated in the world of baseball.
