Connor Wong's Biography

Connor Sun-Han Wong, an American professional baseball player, is best known as an exceptional catcher and infielder for the high-ranking Boston Red Sox under the umbrella of Major League Baseball (MLB). Born on May 19, 1996, Wong stands 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighs an impressive 181 pounds. A skilled right-handed batter and fielder, he made his first entry into professional baseball as a member of the MLB in June 2021. Prior to this, he managed to play every position except pitcher in the minor leagues.

Wong has strong roots in Pearland, Texas, as that is where he attended Pearland High School and additionally, where he executed his passion for baseball. A little-known fact about Wong is that he is the stepson of former Montreal Expos and Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Matt Maysey. As early as 2014, Wong’s proficiency in baseball was well-acknowledged as he won all-state honors as a shortstop during his senior year.

However, in the 2014 MLB draft, he was not selected which became a turning point of his life. He took a significant decision to enhance his skills by enrolling at the University of Houston to play college baseball for the Cougars. The decision turned out to be fruitful for him. Starting most of Houston’s games at shortstop, Wong hit six home runs and ran 37 runs batted in during his freshman year. The rising star was also assigned to play in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox during the summer season.

Wong’s second year at Houston was a breakthrough for him. He started every single game of the season, and he was given the opportunity to play as the catcher, third base, and in the outfield. His stats for the season were outstanding, with a .304/.415/.435 split, five home runs, and 30 runs, earning him first-team all-conference honors in the American Athletic Conference.

As a means to refine his baseball skills, he returned again to the Cape Cod League during the summer of 2016. Playing 41 games with the Bourne Braves, he showcased his abilities with a .313 batting average, three home runs, and achieving the status of an all-star player. By his third year at Houston, he gained proficiency as a full-time catcher, and he ended the season with some great stats, a .287/.379/.494 slash, 12 home runs, 36 runs, and 26 stolen bases.

After college, Wong’s baseball career experienced a significant elevation as he was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the third round of the 2017 MLB draft. He proved his worth by making his professional debut with the rookie-level Arizona League Dodgers and was promoted to the Great Lakes Loons after just one game.

In 2020, Wong was traded to the Boston Red Sox, which was a pivotal point in his career. Because of the cancelation of the 2020 minor league season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wong was invited to partake in the Red Sox’s fall instructional league. Subsequently, he was added to the 40-man roster in November 2020.

June 22, 2021, marked Wong’s first promotion to MLB, and he made a significant debut as a pinch runner in extra innings against the Tampa Bay Rays. His first MLB hit was recorded on June 26 against Jordan Montgomery of the New York Yankees. Throughout the rest of the season, he was optioned back and forth to the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox several times and eventually played six games for Boston, at a batting average of .308. and one RBI.

By the time 2022 came around, he began the season in Triple-A and was soon thereafter called up to Boston in April when Kevin Plawecki was placed on the COVID-related list. Wong played a significant role in a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays by hitting a sacrifice fly. After this, he was optioned back to Worcester in April, but returned to Boston in July of the same year. In the following season, Wong mainly served as the catcher for the Red Sox, playing 126 games, hitting nine home runs and stealing eight bases.

Apart from his successful baseball journey, Wong has a beautiful family life. He is married to Danielle Adair Wong, and they share a son.
