BIOGRAPHY

Phillip Nicholas Fitzgerald Hawes, known widely by his name Phil Hawes, is an eminent figure in the world of mixed martial arts. Born on January 8, 1989, Hawes hails from the United States and currently competes in the middleweight division of the highly prestigious Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Hawes initiated his career path as an accomplished wrestler, securing a national junior-college wrestling championship title in the 197 lb category at Iowa Central Community College. After proving his mettle there, he advanced to the Division I at Iowa State, where he showcased his wrestling prowess while simultaneously earning a degree in sociology.

Hawes first tasted professional victory after winning three consecutive times in the regional circuit. His impressive regional record paved the way for his inclusion in The Ultimate Fighter 23, where he was one of 16 light heavyweight fighters. Despite his vigorous efforts, Hawes couldn’t secure a victory against Andrew Sanchez in the entry fight, losing via unanimous decision.

Nonetheless, Hawes’ tenacity and passion for the sport remained unfazed. He signed up with the World Series of Fighting (WSOF) and made his triumphant debut in WSOF 31 against Joshua Kay, winning the bout via a first-round TKO. Not long after, he stepped into the ring with future PFL champion Louis Taylor at WSOF 32 as a last-minute stand-in for Shamil Gamzatov. The match unfortunately ended in Hawes’ defeat, losing in the second round via a guillotine submission.

Hawes’ journey then led him to Dana White’s Contender Series 4 in August 2017, where he engaged Julian Marquez. Although he was knocked out by a powerful head kick in the second round, it did nothing to suppress his fighting spirit. Following his defeat to Marquez, Hawes took a hiatus from the circuit, relocating to Thailand to train in Muay Thai.

In April 2018, at the MAX Muay Thai Stadium, his training bore fruit as he clinched a unanimous victory over Iranian fighter Reza Goodary. Upon his return to the US, Hawes faced Michael Wilcox at Bellator 222 in June 2019, winning the bout after doctors ruled Wilcox unfit to continue.

Hawes later signed with Brave Combat Federation, scoring a series of victories, including a notable first-round submission over Dominik Schober at Brave CF 30 in India and a TKO against Yuri Fraga at Brave CF 34 in Slovenia. His string of wins in Bellator and Brave paved his way back to Dana White’s Contender Series in September 2020, where he won a UFC contract after beating Khadzhimurat Bestaev via a first-round TKO.

Making his UFC debut in October 2020 at UFC 254, Hawes knocked his opponent, Jacob Malkoun, unconscious within the initial 18 seconds of their fight—an impressive performance to say the least. In the following year, Hawes clinched another victory via majority decision against Nassourdine Imavov at UFC Fight Night in February 2021, showcasing his adeptness at braving through intense pressure. He continued his victorious run by defeating Kyle Daukaus in May 2021 at UFC on ESPN.

Later in July 2021, Hawes was set to face Deron Winn at UFC on ESPN 26, but the match was postponed due to Winn’s health issues. The fight was rescheduled for October 2021 at UFC Fight Night 194 but got scrapped last minute when Winn withdrew due to health problems.

Hawes then encountered Chris Curtis in the ring in November 2021 at UFC 268, unfortunately losing by a first-round KO. Early in 2022, he was scheduled to fight Sam Alvey as a replacement for Ian Heinisch at UFC Fight Night 200 but had to withdraw due to an undisclosed injury.

Come June 2022 at UFC on ESPN 37, Hawes faced Winn again, winning via a technical knockout in the second round, after dominating the first round with his superior striking. This win earned him the Performance of the Night award.

However, his following bouts in October 2022 against Roman Dolidze at UFC Fight Night 213 and in May 2023 against promotional newcomer Ikram Aliskerov at UFC 288 ended in defeat, as he was knocked out in the first round in each fight.

Despite the adversities, Hawes, ever the dedicated and consummate professional, is slated to make a comeback facing Brunno Ferreira on January 13, 2024, at UFC Fight Night 234. Phil Hawes’ journey in the world of mixed martial arts continues, with both fans and critics eagerly anticipating his upcoming match.
