BIOGRAPHY
Gregor Gillespie is an American mixed martial artist currently competing in the Lightweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He is ranked #12 in the UFC lightweight rankings as of 2020.
Gillespie, a native of Rochester, New York, began his martial arts career at age eight when he started studying Shotokan karate. At high school he wrestled and went on to wrestle for Edinboro University. After college Gillespie continued to pursue his grappling passion and achieved black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. He also won several prestigious IBJJF events such as Pan Ams, Grappler’s Quest and NAGA tournaments.
Gillespie made his professional MMA debut in 2011 with an impressive submission victory over Chris Liguori at CFFC 11: The Gauntlet. From there he amassed an undefeated record while fighting primarily for Cage Fury Fighting Championships (CFFC). During this time he earned three titles: light heavyweight champion, featherweight champion and bantamweight champion before signing with UFC in 2017.
In 2017 Gillespie made his UFC debut at Fight Night 116 against Jason Gonzalez where he won by submission via rear-naked choke in round two earning him Performance of the Night honors from UFC president Dana White. Since then Gregor has gone 4-2 overall inside the Octagon including wins over Vinc Pichel and Jordan Rinaldi earning him another Performance of the Night bonus from White after submitting Rinaldi with a triangle armbar late into round three at Fight Night 151 earlier this year (2019). His most recent fight was against Kevin Lee which ended up being stopped due to injury after just 0:18 seconds had elapsed into Round One making it one of fastest knockout victories ever recorded inside the Octagon on July 20th 2019 .
Outside of competing Gillespie actively trains full time out of Long Island MMA Academy alongside fellow fighters such as Aljamain Sterling and Chris Weidman while helping coach younger amateurs who are looking to make their way into professional MMA competition along side coaches Ray Longo & Matt Serra among others.. On top ogf all that Gregor also holds down a day job working for MetLife insurance company where he works with clients providing them financial advice about retirement planning investing etc.. All together these experiences have helped shape him into not only one highly skilled competitor but also successful entrepreneur outside octagon which will help propel him towards achieving even greater success both within & outside cage throughout course remainder 2019 & beyond
