Ty Anthony Montgomery II, born on 22nd January, 1993, is a former professional American football player revered for his versatility on the field. His story begins in Dallas, Texas, where he attended St. Mark’s School and excelled in not one, but five sports including football, track, basketball, baseball, and lacrosse. His football performance was consistently exceptional, especially during his senior year where he amassed 823 rushing yards on 93 carries and culminated in 10 touchdowns. Montgomery’s high school career saw him gather a remarkable 118 catches and 36 total touchdowns, earning him a stellar reputation as an all-rounder.

Apart from his prowess on the football field, Montgomery was also a standout track and field athlete. Specializing as a sprinter and long jumper, he won first-place finishes in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash at the 2011 SPC Championships. His impressive performance didn’t stop there. He anchored the 4×100 squad to victory and recorded a career-best leap of 6.55 meters in the long jump at the 2011 Lancaster Meet of Champions.

On transitioning to college, Ty Montgomery continued his football journey at Stanford University from 2011 to 2014. The wide receiver donned the uniform number 88 for his first two seasons, before switching to number 7 to mark a fresh start and honor his Christian faith. His switch sparked a memorable move by Stanford to retire ‘7’ Jersey in honor of their legendary quarterback, John Elway, making Ty and fellow player Aziz Shittu the last to wear that number.

Montgomery’s college career was eventful and fruitful. His contribution extended beyond offense to special teams, securing notable successes, including 350 receiving yards, 24 receptions, and two receiving touchdowns in his freshman year. His college climax came in 2013 when Montgomery earned Consensus All-American honors as a return specialist. He led the nation with a 31.2-yard kickoff return average, and concluded his college career with a tally of 15 touchdown receptions, 172 receptions, and 2,125 yards.

Upon leaving Stanford, Montgomery was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft. His debut NFL season saw moments of brilliance, interrupted by injury mid-season. More opportunities came in 2016 when he shifted positions to running back due to injuries to Eddie Lacy and James Starks. The shift from wide receiver to running back turned out to be momentous. Montgomery soon established himself as a key player, culminating in a career-best performance against the Chicago Bears. He finished the 2016 season leading Packers’ team as a rusher.

Despite sustaining injuries in the 2017 season, Montgomery made valuable contributions to the Green Bay Packers, adding to his tally of touchdowns and rushing yards. However, his time with the Packers ended on a bitter note, after a fumble during a crucial moment against the Los Angeles Rams in October 2018. Montgomery was traded to the Baltimore Ravens shortly thereafter.

Montgomery’s career continued with stints at the Baltimore Ravens, followed by the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, and finally the New England Patriots. Although his time with the Ravens and Jets was less eventful, Montgomery found new life at the Saints, notably rushing for 105 yards in a week 17 victory against the Carolina Panthers.

In March 2022, he signed with the New England Patriots, but due to an unfortunate injury, he was placed on reserve. This setback did not deter him, however, and after a brief stint with the practice squad, he rejoined the active roster. His Patriots journey was short-lived, however, and he was waived in December 2023.

On September 20, 2024, Montgomery announced his retirement from professional football.
