BIOGRAPHY
Chatarius “Tutu” Atwell Jr. (born October 7, 1999) is a professional American football wide receiver for the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL (National Football League). A talented and versatile player, he has demonstrated exceptional prowess in his position, known for his speed, agility, and impressive wide-ranging field vision.
Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Atwell attended Miami Northwestern Senior High School, where he began his football career. Initially, he was a quarterback and led his team to a state championship victory in his senior year. Despite his success in the position, Atwell transitioned to wide receiver in college due to his smaller size.
Atwell attended the University of Louisville, Kentucky, where his transition to wide receiver proved successful beyond expectations. He shone particularly in his sophomore season in 2019, where he was credited with 70 receptions for 1,276 yards and 12 touchdowns. This performance stood him out as Louisville’s first 1,000-yard wide receiver in a decade, leading to his spot on the All-ACC first team.
The young star announced his intention to forgo his Senior season and instead declared for the 2021 NFL draft after his junior season in 2020. Atwell’s profile going into the 2021 draft was mixed. While his speed and capability as a receiver were universally praised, NFL scouts did express concern about his size, as he stands at 5-foot-9 and weighs 155 pounds. However, his apparent knack for finding space on the football field and eluding defenders with his agility and quickness served to somewhat quell these concerns.
During the 2021 NFL Draft, Atwell was selected in the second round, 57th overall, by the Los Angeles Rams. His selection was in line with the Rams’ priority for speed in their receiver corps, with Atwell arguably being one of the fastest players in the draft. Unsurprisingly, Atwell’s smaller size did not deter the Rams, who have demonstrated a knack for incorporating smaller, speedier receivers into their offensive operations.
In terms of Atwell’s playing style, he is known for his impressive speed, quickness, and elusive agility. His extraordinary ability to change directions quickly and peel away from defenders set him apart during college and continues to do so in the professional realm. Aside from his athleticism, Atwell is known for his determination and perseverance, constantly working to improve and perfect his skills on and off the field.
Off the field, Atwell maintains a private life, rarely promoting himself on social media or partaking in many public appearances outside of his football career. He attributes his success to the unwavering support of his family and the discipline and resilience he learned through sport.
Still at the dawn of his professional career, Tutu Atwell is undoubtedly a promising talent in the NFL. His time at the University of Louisville and his early career in the NFL have more than proven his potential, and NFL fans across the country are eager to see how his future with the Los Angeles Rams unfolds.
