John Stephens Jr., an American professional football tight end for the renowned Dallas Cowboys, a flagship team of the National Football League (NFL), was born on the 23rd of September, 1999. His journey into professional football is inspiring, having navigated through different challenges and experiences, both in high school and college, to make a name for himself in the NFL.

Stephens kick-started his football career in the humble setting of Logansport High School, a modest educational institution with an overall enrolment of only 175 students. Despite the modest resources available, Stephens displayed exceptional talent, playing both as a wide receiver and as a defensive lineman. His senior year at Logansport was exceptional. He recorded 1,001 receiving yards, 17 touchdowns, and performed 64 solo tackles, with 12 of these being recorded as loss tackles. These remarkable stats undoubtedly played a part in his high school football team achieving a commendable 13-1 record, and even making it to the state semi-finals.

Following his exceptional high-school career, Stephens moved to Texas, accepting a football scholarship from Texas Christian University (TCU). In his freshman year, he managed to play off the bench in eight games and made 2 receptions spanning 58 yards. His highlights included a 47-yard reception against the formidable University of Oklahoma.

Stephens continued to impress as a sophomore at TCU. His participation increased, he appeared in 12 games, and tallied 11 receptions for 157 yards. A standout performance saw him making 3 receptions for 40 yards against Texas Tech University. However, his third year, or junior season, was not as impactful as he only managed to make a single reception for 5 yards, against Kansas State University.

Fuelled by ambition and constantly looking to step up his game, Stephens moved to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette after his junior year. He started showing signs of improvement in his performance during his senior year in 2021. He managed to collect 13 receptions for 167 yards and even scored 4 touchdowns. Notable performances included 3 receptions for 48 yards and a single touchdown against Nicholls State University, and 3 receptions for 37 yards and 2 touchdowns against Ohio University.

In 2022, as a super senior, Stephens served as a backup wide receiver. Nonetheless, he recorded impressive stats, comprising of 14 receptions, 284 yards, and 3 touchdowns. Stellar games included a match against Eastern Michigan University where he showcased his prowess with 3 receptions for 103 yards, and a touchdown.

Following the 2023 NFL draft, the Dallas Cowboys expressed an interest in the talented young player. On May 12, they signed Stephens as an undrafted free agent. During training camp, he was converted into a tight end and was well on his way to making the roster. However, a debilitating ACL injury in the second preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks significantly slowed him down. The injury was severe enough to cause him to be placed on the injured reserve list by August 29, 2023.

Along with the passion and dedication to the sport, football is deeply ingrained in Stephens’ lineage. He is the son of the late John Stephens, an NFL Pro Bowl running back. In fact, his stepsister is the 2017 U.S. Open Tennis champion, Sloane Stephens.
