Jimmy Garoppolo

James Richard Garoppolo, or known as “Jimmy G,” was born on November 2, 1991. He is an accomplished quarterback in the National Football League (NFL) and currently plays for the Los Angeles Rams. Born in Arlington Heights, Illinois, Garoppolo grew up in a big, closely-knit Italian family, being the third of four sons born to Denise (née Malec) and Tony Garoppolo Sr., a retired electrician.

In his high school years at Rolling Meadows, Garoppolo showcased his talent for sports, playing as the starting quarterback and linebacker in addition to his role as a pitcher for the school’s baseball team. After much consideration, he accepted the offer to play football at Eastern Illinois University, where he outperformed the expectations, setting numerous school records for career passing yards and touchdowns.

In 2014, the New England Patriots recognized Garoppolo’s talent and potential, selecting him in the second round of the NFL draft. Even though he spent his first four seasons as a backup to the legendary Tom Brady, Garoppolo was instrumental in the Patriots’ success, including being part of two Super Bowl Championship-winning seasons.

The San Francisco 49ers, in need of revitalization, traded for Garoppolo in late 2017. Coming onto a struggling 1-10 team, Garoppolo made an immediate impact, leading the 49ers to a five-game winning streak that breathed new life into the franchise.

In the 2019 season, Garoppolo led the 49ers to the NFC Championship game and the Super Bowl LIV. Unfortunately, his exciting career with the 49ers was slowed by a series of injuries that caused him to miss most of the 2018 and 2020 seasons.

Despite the setbacks, Garoppolo showcased his perseverance and dedication to the sport. Despite suffering another season-ending injury in 2022, he remained in the NFL, spending a year with the Las Vegas Raiders before eventually joining the Los Angeles Rams.

Garoppolo’s achievements on the field are remarkable, but he also has an interesting off-field story. His older brothers, Tony Jr., an architect, and Mike, a teacher, along with his younger brother Billy, are central figures in his life. As part of a big, tight-knit Italian family, Garoppolo’s paternal grandparents, Anthony and Rose, were both Italian immigrants, while his maternal grandparents, Theodore J. Malec and Harriet D. Seidel, were of Polish and German descent, respectively.

His football journey began in his high school years at Rolling Meadows in Illinois, where he played as a quarterback and linebacker. He also displayed a love for baseball as a pitcher for the school’s team, revealing that baseball was his “first love.”

Garoppolo’s college years were spent at Eastern Illinois, where he started for the Panthers from 2010 to 2013. Notable achievements include breaking school records for career passing yards and touchdowns, previously held by Dallas Cowboys’ Tony Romo. His college career culminated with him winning the Walter Payton Award for being the most outstanding offensive player in Division I football.

Garoppolo’s professional football journey took off when he was selected as the 62nd overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft by the New England Patriots. Being the first player from the Football Championship Subdivision drafted that year, landing a spot on the Patriots’ roster was a significant step in his career. Playing alongside and under the mentorship of Tom Brady, Garoppolo contributed significantly to two Super Bowl-winning campaigns.

The next chapter in his professional career began in 2017 when he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers. His arrival marked a turning point for the struggling team, finishing the season with a five-game winning streak under his leadership.

Despite injury setbacks in the 2018 and 2020 seasons, Garoppolo returned stronger, leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game in 2021. His perseverance and dedication to the sport were evident when he returned to the field after another season-ending injury in 2022. Today, he continues to inspire on the football field as a quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams.
