Eric Rowe

Nelson Eric Rowe Jr., born on October 3, 1992, is a distinguished American professional football player, best known as a safety but currently a free agent. A former footballer for the Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, and Pittsburgh Steelers, Rowe’s career in the National Football League (NFL) exhibits an array of accomplishments and accolades reflecting his exceptional ability and dedication to the sport.

Raised in Spring, Texas, Rowe began playing football at Doerre Intermediate and Klein High School, where he amassed an impressive list of statistics during his high school career – 207 tackles and nine interceptions. Highly regarded as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, Rowe was ranked the 39th best safety in his class and caught the attention of many colleges nationwide. Eventually, he made the decision to further his football career at the University of Utah.

Rowe’s tenure at the University of Utah spanned from 2011-2014. Fresh out of high school, he started as safety in his freshman year, and this initiation into college football proved to be a profitable one. He started all 13 games, recording 69 tackles, an interception and a sack. Continuing his strong performance into sophomore year, Rowe started 10 games, missing two due to injury, and had 64 tackles and another interception. As a junior, Rowe fell into a familiar rhythm, starting in all 12 games and finishing with 69 tackles and a half sack. By his senior year, his impressive participation record and performance led him to transition from safety to cornerback. Although his final college year saw him starting 10 of 12 games and recording 59 tackles and an interception, his name went down in history for starting 45 of 47 games and recording 261 tackles, three interceptions, and 1.5 sacks for Utah.

Taken as the 47th overall in the second round of the 2015 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, Rowe established himself as a compelling force in the professional league. His $4.87 million four-year contract established him as one to watch. However, it was his performance in games that solidified his reputation. In one memorable instance, Rowe made his first career interception off a pass attempt by Jets’ quarterback Geno Smith during a 24-17 win at the New York Jets in Week 3.

After proving his worth and overcoming challenges within the Eagles, Rowe moved to the New England Patriots in 2016. Despite initial injury setbacks, Rowe eventually found his rhythm within the Patriots, appearing in Super Bowl LI with the Patriots and being part of the largest comeback in Super Bowl history when the Patriots won the Falcons 34-28.

Rowe’s journey through the NFL defies the notion of permanent setbacks. Despite struggling with a groin injury in the 2017 season that limited him to only eight games and three starts, he was not to be defeated. He came back to the field with the same intensity that defined his career, helping the Patriots achieve a 13-3 record, a first-round bye and home field advantage throughout the playoffs in 2017. Even more memorable was Rowe’s performance in Super Bowl LII, despite the loss to his former team, the Eagles.

Continuing his NFL journey, Rowe joined the Miami Dolphins in 2019 on a one-year, $3.50 million contract. In his new team, Rowe continued to show his versatility, shifting to strong safety due to another player’s injury. His remarkable adaptation to this new position earned him a three-year, $16.15 million contract extension, ensuring his place in the Dolphins through the 2022 NFL season.

Rowe’s time in Miami held multiple highlights, such as intercepting a pass from his ex-teammate Tom Brady and returning it for a 35-yard pick six during the 27-24 win over the New England Patriots in Week 17, and recording his first interception of the season off a pass thrown by Jared Goff during a 28-17 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 8.

In 2023, Rowe left the Dolphins and briefly joined the Carolina Panthers. He was later waived for final roster cuts and joined the Panthers’ practice squad before being released in September. Rowe concluded his 2023 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, signing into their practice squad in November.

As of now, Rowe continues to exude the same raw tenacity and unparalleled performance that has led to his striking successes throughout his career.
